  • Hard News: Random,

I drive through Tokanui (the Waipa one) a fair bit. It is well-known in the district for being the site of the old Waikato DHB mental health hospital (now closed).

It is also just a few kms from Waikeria prison.

The surrounding land is pretty sweet dairy country so I assume the cheap houses are ex-DHB or ex-Corrections staff housing.

  • Cracker: Stoopid,

Worse, those bozos replaced them with seats whose armrest don't go right up.

A guy I know (yeah, one of those) who works in aviation says that there is a secondary latch behind/underneath the pivot point that allows the armrests to go all the way up. I haven't 777'ed since I got that piece of advice, but it might be worth investigating next time you do.

    slarty's good post

Always follow the money. These legislation/policy changes are generally nix'ed by the influence of the groups who stand to benefit from them NOT happening.

  • Speaker: Moving Right Along,

Rugby needs its own 20/20 discuss....

It already exists. They call it "League".

When you're playing the blues, whisky is essential.

Nice work Jeremy. Can I suggest one change that I think would make it perfect? (and win you the prize)

When you're beating the blues, whisky is essential.

  • Hard News: A fairly weird encounter,

Liked the point the victim was named and shamed but that cops have a special protection by the media. One rule for all dogs comes to mind.

I don't think the name suppression rule works when one of the "dogs" is dead. You can't be prosecuted for defaming, slandering or libeling a dead person... can you?

Just like the last shooting (also a Stephen - there must be a conspiracy theory in there somewhere) the officer's name will eventually come out.

  • Random Play: Diana of Wails: The…,

My girlfriend (now wife) and I were being escorted by a real estate agent around prospective houses for sale. We pulled up to a rundown farmhouse and the agent knocked on the door. The old farmer in his swannie and socks opened up and greeted the agent with "Have you heard? The Princess of Wales has been killed in a car crash". The agent replied "Oh, is that right... Now I've got some people to show through the house."

Talk about focused on the sale.

P.S. We didn't buy that one (but not because of Diana's death. The house smelled like he kept his farm animals in there)

  • Southerly: In Praise of Arthur,

I am a patent vacillator when it comes to haircuts.

Sometimes on a lazy Saturday morning I like to go to the "lovely young foreign lady with an exotic accent" (Establishment called "The Sharing Shed"). She does good haircuts but takes about 20 minutes to finish the job.

Last time I went she offered to trim my eyebrows. They are a bit unruly and looking like you've got a pair of gypsy moth caterpillars crawling on your forehead can get you sprayed with BTK if you live in Hamiltron.

If I'm in a hurry I go to "the young bloke with spiky hair" (Peros barbershop). He is fast, good and has a good line in light chat.

I don't know either of their names. Does that make me a "hair-John"? Just there for the service and then on my way... Like the Tina Turner song, "Private Dancer".

All the men come in these places
And the men are all the same
You don't look at their faces
And you don't ask their names
You don't think of them as human
You don't think of them at all
You keep your mind on the scissors
Keeping your eyes on the hair

I'm your private barber, a barber for money
I'll do what you want me to do
I'm your private barber, a barber for money
And any old cut style will do

  • Hard News: The meaning of a Banana,

So if a person of Chinese origin becomes a "banana", then what is the equivalent term for Maori / Pacific Islanders who have undergone the same cultural shift?...

Potato? ("brown on the outside, white on the inside")

What do you call people like myself? White on the outside, but partly brown on the inside. Please, try not to prefix your answer with the word "Rotten..."

  • Hard News: Some things you may not know,

Technical Limitations might find your long VGA cable wanting in the clarity department (even if it is very high quality cable).

Looks like the best ones are good for only about 10m. (but I'm no expert)
