  • Up Front: Go For Launch,

be all right if it was a beer worth drinking.

    I'll drink to that.

Unfortunately - and be warned, those attending the Wellington launch - in the past Parliamentary functions have had two types of beer: Heineken and one other I can never remember.

Now, about a month back a new firm got the catering contract. Don't know if that will change the beer but I hope so.

Thus far the main change in the lunch bar has been the arrival of vegetarian pies.

I can never see the point of vegetarian pies. It's a bit like decaffeinated coffee.

  • Up Front: Go For Launch,

I just thought the blokes in that ad seemed very Platonic, but not in the way usually associated with beer ads.

  • Up Front: Go For Launch,

when I lived in Thorndon, and was running, the Thistle was on my route. This is when it was still a fairly rough pub.

Came past one post-deadline run on a Thursday arvo, two old blokes leaning on the rail on the footpath outside, smoking like chimneys and surrounded by empties.

'Slow down, you'll kill yourself,' one of them says to me.

'We've all got to die of something,' was my shot back.

It was a nicely inverted exchange, I felt.

Dr Hayward has already appraised me, via email, of the Parliamentary launch and it is in my diary.

I shall be there, probably the only one in double breasted pinstripes, with my Presbyterian reserve and my silent thoughts of 'I think that goes a bit far.'

Will skip the subesequent festivities, I suspect. Past my bedtime.

  • Cracker: Mo' Better Reason,

Good luck with the run. When I started doing them about 11 years ago I was so anxious to make sure I could manage a half marathon I did a couple of 25km runs beforehand, just to make sure.

Then I decided to see how far I could run before finally conking out. Managed just under 34kms.

So I was a bit over-trained by the time the actual event came around. Still, I'd love to be that fit again.

    Raymond:

So we are going up the Matukituki riverto Aspiring hut then up to the Cascade saddle for a look, great views of Mt Aspiring if the weather is fine

Envy-gland now in over-drive. One of my favourite parts of the country. One of my favourite parts of any country.

  • Up Front: White in Brighton,

Rendang that does not look and taste like an Indian curry?

Satay Palace in Cuba St, Wellington, does a good one. The place itself looks a bit basic but their rendang is the best I've had.

Apart from my home made ones, of course...

  • Hard News: Miracles just rate better, okay?,

At the risk of thread-jacking - and only because I know a number of people here have issues with the illiness in question, and because it is an area which attracts quite a bit of 'woo woo': intrigueing development on

    chronic fatigue syndrome.

  • Hard News: The new wave,

Back when I worked on the newspaper in Whakatane, the seismograph (or whatever its called) on White Island kept breaking.

The DSIR officially blamed the fallout from the constant eruptions, but then the seismothingy on land also kept breaking.

One of the worst shakes we had there - right on deadline - I phoned up the DSIR guy in Rotorua (while still sitting under my desk). He says "oh, so you felt it there too?" and asks me more questions about the strength of the shake for his bloody report.

I think GNS do things better now.

  • Speaker: How to Look Good as a Nazi,

Ridiculing, debasing, and making powerless objects of humour of Nazi regalia is the surest sign I can think of that their defeat was total.

Not to mention singing songs about their testicles.

  • Speaker: How to Look Good as a Nazi,

Well, yes, that's why the idea of national feeling is daft.

    Hear hear.

My English ancestors kicked my Scottish ancestors out of the Highlands. Half of me is supposed to be bitter and resentful towards my other half, which is supposed in turn to be smug and overbearing.

    It's a load of nonsense.
