Imagine a gigantic rocky mountain at the beginning of kalpa, approximately 16 x 16 x 16 miles (dwarfing Mount Everest). You take a small piece of silk and wipe the mountain once every 100 years. According to the Buddha, the mountain will be completely depleted even before the kalpa ends.

The rambling excuses Key gave for not going to fulfil his pledge at Waitangi this morning on Morning Report were reminiscent of some schoolboy trying to worm their way out of some onerous duty...
He missed the chance to show that he was still cox of his waka,
that he had everyones best interests at heart,
that he was the man -
that he could afford to be magnanimous and would
honour the bulk of the people rather than flee from the few
fuelling his imagined violent battle scenes,
where his staff would be subject to horrific predations,
- even though that is arguably what they sign up for...
predations he was admittedly willing to endure alone
- just what is he on?
- has he lost that much control ?
...and confidenceand later on his broken pledge
listen to him make stuff on the fly to justify the unjustifiable
and all his mad 'what if violent riot scenarios'
- no other possibilities entertained:the man is afraid of shadows!

Public finance and national economic policy do seem the black arts of modern life. And in fact the experts say New Zealand is riding a wave of changing practice that is far more radical than most people understand.
Former Canterbury University accountancy lecturer Dr Susan Newberry, now professor of accounting at Sydney University's business school, still keeps a fascinated eye on the "New Zealand experiment". And some of what she sees she finds a little alarming.
In a paper published by Public Money and Management in January, she fingers the mythical nature of our Earthquake Recovery Commission's (EQC) Natural Disaster Fund – which she sees as part of a bigger story about how the government now freely shuffles its assets around within the national balance sheet.
And in another heavy-hitting paper published in Critical Perspectives in Accounting last year, Newberry raised a red flag on New Zealand's financialisation of its sovereign debt.
Does the average Kiwi know the country's balance sheet now has a derivatives exposure of $180b, she asks? That is rather a lot of those "financial weapons of mass destruction".

A Sydney restaurant has been questioned by NSW Police over its "unsavoury" and "antisocial" wine list.
The restaurant, 10 William Street in Paddington, was advertising "wine by the glass" on its blackboard when NSW Police entered the small Italian-style bar on Saturday night.
Police told the venue's manager that they were concerned the blackboard was too close to the front of the terrace-turned-candlelit bar and could encourage heavy drinking.

Just wondering, on this first Mondayised Waitangi Day-off (thank you Labour), whether the day the TPP was signed will also become a National holiday - marking as a it does (yet again) the day those in charge sold future generations into penury and litigation without end. -

I caught the end of some bloke reporter on Story trying to pretend he was a protestor and basically lampooning everybody - very unedifying non-reporting, patronising prick ruminated on how people were just confused and angry.
Finished off with HDPA's personal stance which avoided the issues and focused on the inconvenience to drivers - way to miss the big picture.
