Interesting, and a little unusual, that they would be willing to say that they hate him but not why. Or is it the case that they are reporting that he is hated?

Lots of "having dealt with him in business..." with the rest left out, one assumes due to not wanting to discuss their commercial interests. And more detail on hatred (wife just got back from visiting her parents in the electorate) - he ran a very negative campaign, so his endless letter box spam was all low brow slagging of Dunne.

@Ben. Why do people keep voting in that drongo Dunne? He is Mr Opportunist supreme.

I've talked to a fair few people in his electorate to try and figure that one out - common thread seems to be hatred of Chauvel. No-one has explained what he did to make them hate him so much though.

Definitely though, I do appreciate that the “let’s agree to disagree” is often a passive-aggressive version of “let’s not discuss it so that the established norm can continue by default.”

    This.

Too often I get frustrated by most NZers fear of conflict leading to no decisions being made, no change happening. Both politically and in the workplace, agreeing to disagree leads to everything staying the same or worse, stagnating because we're not making the changes we need to, to keep up with a changing world.

So, about that negotiation. Are we picking more or less (ab)use of urgency during this term?

Tracy Watkins love-fest for the return of Key has the bold opinion that 48% of the vote means you can do whatever you like, and bolsters that by claiming that broad asset sales and beneficiary bashing don’t constitute a lurch to the right.

I’m going to guess that because so many (although not a majority) of the people voted for them, their overwhelming use of urgency to pass bills without debate is just going to be classed as “Giving the majority of New Zealanders what they asked for at the election”.

So the ugly truth come out – ...rant rant rant foam flail wildly...

To put this in terms alcoholic New Zealanders understand - you're proposing that you should be able to sit down in a pub and drink the top shelf dry, then swan off and leave the tab for whoever is unfortunate enough to sit at the table next (who might even have liked a sazerac if there'd been any rye left).

    Nice.

should read "ministerial interference" I think? Unless there's a subtext there that I just don't understand.

It remains a fact, though, that we have the term murder as a specific descriptor for unlawful killing

Fair. The whole thing is massively tangential to the point of this thread anyway (which I shouldn't have encouraged).

  • OnPoint: Other People's Wars, in reply to Rich Lock,

Whilst I mostly agree with the original comment, I agree that use of the word ‘murder’ is emotive and entirely counter-productive.

Assuming everyone agrees that there is such a thing as just war, and that it is possible to have such in a war of invasion.
