  • Island Life: Gassed Up,

The winner of the Indy 500 always drinks a pint of milk, because Indiana is a big dairy area. Except the year that Emerson Fittipaldi won, because he's vegan. He drank orange juice instead.

The Indycar series uses plant-sourced ethanol as fuel since last year, not fossil fuels (not directly, anyway).

And big congrats to Scott, that's a huge, huge win. Worth waking up for!

  • Southerly: My First Stabbing,

Love it! Add my vote for a wee book of such tales, I'd buy it.

  • Random Play: Soul to Seoul,

Something the museum could look at is the same thing as places like the Powerhouse in Sydney - if you go, pay entry/donation/whatever then you can take that off the cost of a subscription if you sign up on the day.

I was there yesterday and did exactly that (along with the folks behind me in the queue) and it took a bit of working out, should just be a box on the form.

Loved the living room in the volcano exhibit. There was a family group sitting on the couch in front of us and when the first shake came and the lights went out, grandma instantly said "Fuck!"... "ooh sorry everybody", while Dad started texting somebody "<embarrassed smiley> Nana dropped the F bomb..."

  • Island Life: Supertooth,

As a former Hamiltonian I've always thought Cuisine basically ignored the city completely, good to see they've noticed it's existence now.

And yeah the V8's were great - it seems a bit ironic that now Hamilton really is a place where things "happen", they seem to have changed the city's motto to something else!

And speaking of the music... who picks the music at Super 14 games? What on earth are they thinking? It's always puzzled me greatly.

  • Hard News: Things To Do,

Just don't do what Australia does, I was over there when the GST was introduced and it's a complete shemozzle.

Cooked chicken (whole)? No GST. Cooked chicken in pieces? GST. Bread? No GST. Sweet bread with icing on top? GST. Argh!

It's absolutely customary in Vietnam. You have to ask them to leave it out if you don't want it.

Interesting - I haven't been to Vietnam but I've never been offered ice in Cambodia, Thailand or Laos. There's some good beer up that way though. Beer Lao watching the sun go down over the Mekong is pretty civilised.

If you're in a second hand bookshop check out "From Fringe to Flying Circus: Celebrating a Unique Generation of Comedy 1960-1980" by Roger Wilmut, it has a great history and discussion of that period of Brit comedy, and lots of scripts & excerpts as well.

Whats worse is when you read a feature article from an international outlet on the internet, and months later it turns up in the Herald...

Example: The Herald ran the story this week of one Carlos Camejo waking up while on the autopsy table in Venezuela, which seems to date from last September.
