  • Discussion: Closer to Home?,

It's a (misplaced, in my opinion) belief that New Zealand is a paragon of peace and environmentalism, a nuclear-free paradise, that gives license to criticise others. It bespeaks a significant lack of self-awareness, and a failure to critically reflect on New Zealand's place in the world. That is too much to expect from the woman or man on the street, but it is unfortunate when people who should know better endorse the sentiment.

Food in Wellington? The best value in town (at least the last time I went there in Jan) has to be the vegetarian burgers at the Basin Noodle House. $2. For a tofu burger with real ingredients.

Whatever you do, wherever you decide to go in Wellington, bring a coat. Brrr-loody cold!

Wellington is actually quite a good town to live in. If you own a good reasonably warm windproof coat. Then you're fine.

I fully expected John Key to announce the opening of NewZealandTown at the end, it was that bad. Four was funny though.

  • OnPoint: Manufacturing Dissent,

Once Phil Goff is no longer leader of the Labour Party, it will be possible to have a sensible discussion on crime. A huge part of the problem is that the lynchmob dominate the conversation, but that Labour just sit there agreeing or keeping their mouth shut. There is no vigorous defence of evidence based crime policy, and the media can't be bothered to do that on its own.

In the meantime, crime will continue to increase, we will pay billions for new prisons and prisoners, and we will all be unhappier.

To answer your rhetorical question Keith: no.

  • Up Front: Actors Don't Hunt in Packs,

Isn't that appalling? I will now hide my head in shame.

No shame, at least in my book. There's enough body shame around - if you want to look a particular way, then that's wonderful.

  • Hard News: Save the King's Arms,

I know this is partly my fault in this case, but I love how discussions here eventually tend towards copyright.

I would like to propose a law: "As a Public Address discussion grows longer, the probability of the discussion involving copyright approaches 1"

Further to the last link; it seems the copyright question may be answered sooner rather than later, at least as far as the UK is concerned, as the National Portrait Gallery has launched a lawsuit against a Wikimedia uploader.

  • Hard News: Save the King's Arms,

Since it appears to be an unanswered question, and New Zealand is a common law country, this discussion on the status of copies as original works, as it applies to the status of UK scans in the PD Wikimedia Commons project, might be of interest.
