  • Hard News: Unhappy Birthday,

And two of the leading contenders for POTUSA come out with equally vacuous and "selfish" comments from opposite ends of the argument.

Clinton wants to be out of this "civil war that isn't ours" in 60 days - christ lady who do you think kicked off that civil war? No responsibility huh?
And McCain thinks that as soon as you leave "Al Qaeda have won". Excellent mate, way to play up that Al Qaeda link again.

I know it's a mess, I know the answers aren't easy, but blanket rubbish like that is even worst.

Well it certainly seems to back up the view that it was a mess in there, and that the conflict of interest wasn't sinister but just botched in terms of it's handling.
I think you're right - Cunliffe looks like he made a fairly good call getting rid of them.

Missed this beer but got 6-pack of Amstel Premium through exactly the same mechanism last week. This 393 is presumedly a DB thing then - being a number of their brands and redeemed through their stores. Pretty smart brand marketing, but gets a little diluted when you have a few different brands all doing the same thing.

Re the HB DHB, must admit I haven't followed incredibly closely but I got the feeling that everyone is going to come out a bit murky - i.e. the board were entirely mismanaging the place, the "whisteblower" in Hausmann wasn't so clean himself with his conflicts, and King placed someone in there who was a little too closely linked for comfort. So each of them are furiously pointing fingers at each other, when in reality they were all failing - and frankly the relativity of thos failings doesn't really matter.

  • Hard News: Leaving the bunker,

Or is it an unreasonable expectation that someone you've made an appointment to see be competent, well-trained and civil?

Holy crap, has Vodafone been nationalised?

With apologies to the local lurkers of Voda-ilk who I'm sure are lovely people equally aghast at their system issues...

thirty five million people (half of the total userbase) return daily

    :Shocked-face:
    That is quite mind-blowing.

I like to think that the tipping point for the Rail to the Airport campaign was when I signed up to their Facebook group...

  • Hard News: Leaving the bunker,

It's just a stupid, perjorative word that advances no sensible argument.

And "the John Key of old" (i.e. his first few months as Leader) didn't strike me as being the type to use those pointless perjoratives - he seemed a relatively pragmatic and realistic guy then (I heard at least 2 or 3 Havoc weekly interviews where I thought Key provided much more grounded and pragmatic answers in his than Clark did in hers).
Now days he seems to be rolling out the same old late-90s catch phrases - presumedly driven into him by the "on-message" PR team internally. And that's a real shame.

  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

    Three things:
    1. Anyone know where (roughly) the Ponse exchange is? I'm in Crummer Rd and interested in roughly how far away I am.

    2. As I understand it, Telecom has updated a number of exchanges (including Ponse) to ADSL2+ as well - but does anyone know if they're switched on? I'm getting Auckland-server speedtests at about 4Mbps consistently, interested if that is on the ADSL2+ speeds or if I can expect more?

    3. That PS3 terrestrial tuner could see me spending a good deal of money! Currently still on ye-olde CRT (it's a good Loewe one so the standard-def transmissions that we currently get look miles better than they would on an LCD or Plasma) with Sky Digital, and a not-even-plugged-in DVD player but once I can have a one-box media streaming, gaming, DVD, Blu-Ray and HDTV solution then I'll need to buy that and the TV to match... =]

  • Hard News: What I'd really like to know,

And he has no alternative policy to offer.

This is partly my confusion - he makes statements like:
"National will be rolling out a comprehensive research and development policy closer to the election. We will make long-term funding commitments that provide certainty to the sector because we see it as a way of lifting productivity and helping to make New Zealand a smarter nation."
And then calls this fund a gimmick and says they'll scrap it? So your comprehensive R&D policy doesn't include Govt funds setup to target specific areas of economic potential in NZ then?
