  • Hard News: Alone at Party Central,

Scoundrels, the American Outrageous Fortune adaptation

HoHum. Both just remind me of this song which sums up my feelings about these crime porn shows. Pigs, crims, thugs and their molls were always the least interesting people in the West Auckland I grew up in.
Sure to ruin a party just by turning up.
But hey its telly not reality.

  • Cracker: That's Not My Name,

Jim Anderton said on Backbenches last night

He was good on a few things last night. But he seemed to be a wee bit frail. I hope he's OK, and its just age that is wearying him.

  • Hard News: The Future of the Future,

When did a desire to be "entertained" become the intellectual equivalent of admitting a fondness for kiddie snuff porn?

    Umm Never?
But thanks for repaying my bombast with more of the same.

Or the classic "that book is the equivalent of eating icecream, why don't you read something good for you?"

I must have lead a sheltered life I've never heard that before. So those Michael Moorcock scifantasy books must have been my hokey-pokey.

  • Hard News: The Future of the Future,

    Marcus

I think television - like theatre, movies and band gigs - is mostly used for recreation.

    Oh The missed opportunities...
Sorry my last line was a failed attempt at humour.

    Sacha

When did our days become soooo careworn, that "entertainment" became what we craved?
Uh, one of the longest working weeks in the "developed" world, thanks to low investment in productivity and capital funds, thanks to decisions made in the 80s and 90s by idiot neolibs some of whom still grace our parliament and business circles.

Still doesn't make me crave what passes for entertainment on th' telly. I guess the important word there is ME.
I'm daydream wondering if there isnt some impromptu experiment going on where people are forced by dreadful worldly circumstances to stay in and watching and when things get Better? or whatever. And we emerge blinking into the daylight from our telly caves, those driven to anger by teh mindless fodder are sectioned off from those who were sedated by the diet of drivel.
    OK Conspiracy moment over.

Excuse me while I just nip out to buy Hitch -22. Now that sounds like entertainment with a capital E.
And capital E's can be very entertaining.

  • Hard News: The Future of the Future,

I think most people use free-to-air broadcasting when they want to rest from the cares of their day. They're not looking for education or enlightenment, particularly, but rather for entertainment

When did our days become soooo careworn, that "entertainment" became what we craved?
Or has the human race en masse just given up, and are too timid to ask for more. And instead just whine to those who can do fuck all about it (the people in the room with you at the time).
Is that why personal interactions are going down the shitter?

How is it that a city in a "developing economy" managed to achieve such far-sighted planning,

It seems to have been one man's vision as far as I can tell.

  • Hard News: Still not all that Super?,

Not super at all pretty dumb in fact.
New Zealand made a massive wrong turn in the 70's along with a few other countries in the developed world. Chief amongst them the USA and GB. It kind of sealed our and their fate into endless cycles of boom bust and anyone who can make a buck gets undue adulation.
And poverty gets to become an incurable self inflicted disease.

At least some didn't go down that road
