And then there’s the Beach Boys who possess all the sonic charm of a ambulance siren:

And the award for best local cheese:

  • Hard News: One man’s Meat Puppets is…, in reply to JacksonP,

What’s next? Let me guess, Cocteau Twins and The Jam?

Not at all and no, I’m not trolling. I’m an admirer of Paul Weller especially.

In the end, it comes down to what you subjectively like in music, and barring a few exceptions I have a preference for conventionally strong vocals and reasonably varied melodies and arrangements.

What people heard and liked in the flying nun phenomenon for instance I have absolutely no idea. Most of them could barely play their instruments.

edit: I think John Peel has a lot to answer for. That guy could really sell 'cred'.

Sorry guys…was never a fan of anti-prog naive pop. Don’t ‘get’ the Smiths either. Morrissey’s poncy voice and one dimensional melodies curl me toes:

Worst vocal performance, and most over-rated band of all time:

    Be Afraid!

Problem is, having not heard it for so long, I actually rather enjoyed it.

  • Hard News: The Huawei Question,

[Norman]I can’t really go into it to be honest. Because I’m on the intelligence and security committee, I have to rely on what’s publicly available when I give comment about this. It’s actually illegal for me to talk about what goes on in the committee

Oh gimme a break. I really do wish the Greens would focus on rational environmental issues rather than pandering to society’s paranoid xenophobes.

If there’s evidence that Huawei is jeopardizing its huge revenue and reputation by embedding cyberbugs into the cable network, then Norman should put up or shut up.

My scepticism that there is any truth behind the innuendo rests on the assumption that if palpable evidence exists implicating Huawei in any kind of espionage, why or how would it be suppressed? Too many interested parties would be falling over themselves to leak the details.

  • Hard News: Back to mediocrity,

    Back to mediocrity

    Back from whither?

I'm more disappointed at the quality of the experience of attending at a match at Eden Park.

I'd suggest that if the game is decent, then you could be perched on a plastic pew with piles and still enjoy it. Rugby is terminally ill, analagous to an over-regulated economy. Too many rules that don't work and no one understands.

Try Mt. Smart. It's a dog of a stadium, but the quality of the entertainment more than compensates.

  • Hard News: Reputation and remuneration,

Here's another example of a morally dodgy endorsement:

Mike Hosking has done regular work for the casino, and Paul Henry has a “long-standing association” with it. SkyCity sponsors several big-name sports stars and provides a ‘chairman’s card’ for a small number of celebrities allowing them free five-star hotel rooms, meals and drinks.

Brings to mind Stacey Jones’ endorsement of Instant Finance.

Also, someone put petrol in the wrong kind of container once

Hmm, must remember that excuse if ever I get caught shoplifting. Or urinating in the sink. Or making love to my girlfriend….

Oops – put it in the wrong container. My bad.

  • Hard News: Time to move on,

These guys weren’t heroes and they weren’t terrorists. They were dickheads.

Thankfully we may never really know if the 'dickheads' would have graduated to become fully fledged 'freedom fighters' had the cops not intervened.

That’s the thing about preemptive action of any sort. It rarely gets the credit it deserves.
