  • Hard News: Wellington, you win,

We took our two bairns (4 & 7), as was entirely possibly given the timing and location, and they really loved it. Such a nice introduction to live music. And the grins on their faces at the end of Bright Grey, after they sang/shouted the lyrics (with extra emphasis on ooo-ooo of course) while perched on Becky's and my shoulders, were a sight to behold.

    Alan, that sounds blimmin perfect!

So they fill the air with noise, meaningless entertaining noise.

Robbery.....it almost sounds like you are wishing for the colapse of pop music distribution yourself!

I have to say, over the last couple of years there has been a real jump in the quality and innovation in new music. and still the odd gem hidden within' the pop machine.

  • Island Life: More time with the family,

Are you saying that it would be a good idea (post-revolution, when the usual suspects have been lined up and shot) for NZ to have 13 weeks of annual leave? Would this be for all workers, or just those with children?

that would be one way to create one HECK of a population explosion!

  • Hard News: Make you crazy like datura,

I spent three or four weeks in Auckland ........... My only gripe is the serious lack of good playgrounds.

What sort of playground were you after?

There are many mediocre but usable ones dotted around all sides of our city. and lots of little hidden gems....check out the bottom of west end park in freemans bay, or the one hidden behind trees opposite the rose gardens in parnell, also the witches hat and perfect cycle track at normonton reserve in glenfield......

it is a commonly used argument in the larger world, most often made by youff and one worth addressing.

by the time a usable working model of digital music distribution/consumption exists they may well be way past youffhood

    :)

is this the bit where I get to say "I told you so"....

    ok, i'll get my coat.

    not so fast Robbery.

It may not actually spread everywhere, It may not actually last, and ISPs may find they have trouble policing it.

It would have a major effect on many ISPs revenues I think. as people downgrade their plans. Because they wont need the quantity. So many of them [ISPs] may find ways to ignore it.

Plus some cunning L33t type will certainly be able to twist the already usable Tunneling option so that ISPs will have no idea what the data actually is. Shouldnt be too tricky I imagine.

    oh no.

the last thing i need, when sitting down to read the normally warm fuzzy feelgood world section of granny herald, over a nice bowl of muesli, is a reminder of mr Robbery!

LONDON - Britain could follow France in cutting internet access to users who repeatedly download music or films illegally.

A large part of the pro piracy argument has been majors are evil and have been ripping off customers etc.
you weighed in on that with they are inherently evil and didn't really go into details on your personal dealings with them.

Robb, you really need to get over this.
No one in this discussion has stated that. It is a long long time since I have heard anyone justifying their piracy with such a statement. It WILL get mentioned again, since we are discusssing the evolution of the industry all such pros and cons will come up again and again. When I mention it it's normally to point out that some good will come from this shake up of the industry, not justifying anything.

As for the Radiohead thing. They WANTED lots of people to download it for free, expected many to pay a little. It really doesnt have much to do with 'piracy' at all.

No, they don't require more investment.

i was thinking along the lines of the fact that it probably costs more to set up and run a club than, say, the powerstation or kings arms. possibly not the best arguement I have ever put forth. did need to put that old hack Robbery in his place though!.

My main point, i think, is that we shouldnt slag off the cover charge of DJ gigs. since it is a price the market can obviously afford, possibly because it is less risky for the punter, for the reasons you list above.

average gig prices are still $10 or under, larger bands 15-30.

which hardly makes it a CAREER option...... . we are talking about artists making a living off their music, arent we?

They pay more for dj sets which have less people involved

but which often [not always] occur in better controlled/maintained environments with far far better sound quality. so even though they cost less to put on individually they require more long term investment, and are less likely to be a let down for the punter.....

I'm going to have to slap you over the wrist for a comment like that Samuel.

alright Robbery, the gloves are off,,,,,Did you even read what i said?????? heheheh

understand they're in business to make money, not lose it for a good cause.

I'm not saying they deserve it. I'm saying their mistakes should be part of the discussion. they creamed it in the 80's. and since then have been constantly sucking the soul out of "pop". as i mentioned, sometimes their exercises have actually been brilliant, but too often they have killed great art. and ripped people you and me have never even heard of off. lots of them. with dreams. crushed.

they will never be gone, but their power will be diminished, and i will not miss that.

And I never said they deserve me ripping them off because they rip people off. I simply think its one of the major and more interesting changes that can be predicted with good likelyhood. Which is what Dubber has fun writing about.

[ plus i will never forgive them for Celine Dion.......]
