  • Speaker: Mixing it up, with stats like,

By the way the new Dropkicks podcast is up.

Out of curiosity, I subscribed in iTunes, and listened to about half of the latest podcast on my walk to work this morning.

I rather like it. It's not muntery and doesn't rely on the listener having encylopedic rugby knowledge to understand what's going on. And it's really nicely edited, if I do say so.

(I feel like I'm being initiated into a cult.)

Oh no! I feel all funny now!

Joanna, help me! The boys are seducing me with their rugby talk!

  • Hard News: The Soap Opera,

truth to the suggestion that newspaper execs are pressuring the editorial staff to make the front page a bit racier?

I think it's the old case of when you ask people what they want to see on the news, they'll tell you they want hard-hitting investigative journalism, not that tabloid rubbish.

But when it comes down to actual viewing/reading, it seems that people do rather like knowing about Charlize's saggy boobs and Britney's giant arse.

I don't even like or understand rugby, and yet I enjoyed reading that article. The cultural side of things appeals to me, and I do like a good set of statistics.

Oh, no. Does this mean I'm going to start being interested in rugby?

the really funny thing about MV was how surprised the Americans were.

By having their Grammy taken off them and all the general public backlash, it pretty much revealed that the record-buying public didn't just care about the music, but also put value on image.

And then later no one complained when the people in the Gorillaz videos were different from the people who recorded the music.

Robyn, I'll bet your walking route was by roads, and there wasn't one going the way that really made sense, it was a footpath?

The Maxx site does actually seem to pick its walking routes to include places pedestrians can go but cars can't.

For example, when I figured out the way to walk to work, it directed me up Mercury Lane, which is one-way for cars in the down direction.

(I'm finding this conversation rather interesting, in a nerdy way.)

  • Hard News: Bad Skillz,

Actually, I was let down once by Maxx when I tried to figure out how to get to Sylvia Park.

The bus route there seemed fairly straightforward, but at the end bus stop it marked out a walking route that seemed to direct me around a block, almost to where the bus had stopped in the first place.

I ended up just getting on the bus and pushing the button when I saw the mall loom into sight.

Yes, that's right, it was the walk, you fat lazy bastard option.

I don't know if it's officially meant to be used for generating walking routes, but I find that function of the Maxx route planner to be quite useful.

Especially in Auckland where there's usually a volcano or a gully in the way to prevent a straight walk, the handy map finds the quickest way to walk somewhere.

I've used it to fine-tune my walk to work and it's exposed a few shortcuts that cut time off the Mt Eden to St Lukes path.

It helps me feel nice and self-righteous about not driving.

Have you seen a three-part doco called Pump Up the Volume? It really illuminates the original Chicago house scene and what made it tick.

OMG yes! That is an amazing doco. I'd never completely got house until I saw it.

  • Hard News: Geeky Thursday again,

They really should come up with another term to describe this sort of performer.

Well, there's the term turntablist. Wikipedia defines turntablism as: "the art of manipulating sounds and creating music using phonograph turntables and a DJ mixer."

There are plenty of DJs out there who are doing really innovative stuff. The cool thing is that there is new technology out there like Serato's Srcatch LIVE that let DJs scratch MP3s using vinyl. Innovation ruling the nation!
