  • Hard News: They can see your house from here,

Well, I'd be a lot more nervous with real-time updating - that would present more obvious issues of privacy and security, since people can see what's happening at your place now rather than what happened at a particular random point in the past.

I agree live feeds change the nature of the issue, I asked the question because I think the privacy issues are not simply about the public nature of the data; there's also issues about it's collection and use.

...whereas google's job is to take over the world, so they're not overstepping. And in NZ post's case it seemed more like personal information and probably could be associated with a name. The fact that Google's version is public actually seems a bonus to me in this case.

Good points, but should we really be less concerned about the potential intrusion into our private lives simply 'cause it's a groovy corporation? I do agree however, that the fact that the information is public makes it less sinister.

And it probably is part of the collapse of privacy. But I quite like it myself so far.

Technology is the opiate of the masses?

Jus me then. You're right, the google earth makes backyards viewable, not street view. Plus I realise some of this information/imagery has been available elsewhere, I guess it's the expansion of the data and access that's slightly unnerving.

I understand it's public streets/space too, I just can't shake the feeling that I'll soon need to think about what I put on to bring in my washing.

I wonder how people would feel if rather than static images, it was live feeds as is CCTV in city settings? It'd still be public spaces but then I think the sense of intrusion would be quite different. I should note that I'm probably not too far from the mean here in terms of attitudes to privacy, but I wonder how far from the public mean we all are?

Upthread, I wondered if anyone was slightly nervous about this development, is there really no one else who finds it slightly odd that their backyard is now public? I'm not losing sleep, and the novelty value is still high, but this is an evolution beyond public phone listings. Notions of privacy seem to be steadily eroded but only some cause concern - the discussion in the database nation thread is rich with examples of personal information being needlessly collected, how come not here? Maybe I'm being paranoid.

  • Field Theory: Analyse This,

I didn't see all the games however, from what I did see, I'd say that Muliaina, Nonu, Kahui and Kaino had great tours. Thorn too. Donald's was mixed which makes Carter's sabattical all the more challenging.

Interesting that the second graphic Haydn posted showed it was the damned Aussies that let the South down by losing to the Welsh. I'll make sure I let them know.

The Sydney streetscape's been available for a while. There's dozens of shots down my street including one directly outside my house. I don't particularly like it. I might be out of step here, but my sense is that the technology is too far ahead of the public and risks an over-reaction by government.

  • Random Play: The Key’s under the Matt,

It only really covered the combat wing if you read through it. The Mb339 was never considered as a keep option apart from a reference in option 3, which was never costed.

Thanks Simon, I'd only ever focused on the combat wing stuff, for overtly partisan reasons I might add, so thanks for this.

Of course, all Mr Mapp said was: a defence white paper due to be completed next year would "provide a process to consider whether it is desirable to retain some level of jet training capability"

Why on earth do we need another white paper on jets? Quigley's is less than a decade old and seemed to pretty comprehensively resolve the matter.

    Happy universary indeed.

Oh, that's who Michael Praed is, it's been bugging me, but I thought Wikipedia would be cheating.

I thought so too but immediately on reading who he was, remembered the very beautiful Maid Marion... who I googled... Judi Trott (it was either Ms Trott or Maggie Barry that was my first red-head obsession).

Oh I think the Queens were being paid a lot of attention, it was the straight boys, well this one at least, who were suffering by comparison.

  • Hard News: The smart thing to do,

We won't know until two years after the fact anyway, but yes, recessions reduce emissions. If you look at the graph of NZ emissions, you can see the disaster of the Jenny Shipley government right there in the figures...

Key the neo-Luddite? Couldn't be. Actually, poor old Ned has bad PR; he probably aspired to be leader of the Labour Party too.
