When my twin sons were two years old I started on 18 months of reading World War Two schlock thrillers, then the relentless carnage of Patricia Cornwell. My life was so overwhelmingly child-focused, with brief breaks for work, that I felt in need of a stringent counterpoint. I rapaciously read all her books, the boys turned four and I have never again been tempted by those books.
A few years later a bit of Rebus went down well, but I haven't dipped into much other mystery and crime fiction in recent years.

Here’s another aspect of home for me. Home has come to mean a place of safety and refuge that also has woven into it the opposite: the breaking of much I knew. Some days in the last five years, my mental landscape is as disarranged as if the Port Hills had up and walked off.
That’s okay; I’m coming to terms with that loss of innocence.

The festivals with lights – especially in the winter – have cheered many of us. We need that mood-enhancing magic. Vicki Buck says there will be more use of the Botanic Gardens at night, which will be very cool.

Exactly this. The pinto gris pension tours are understandable for the musicians, - given the GFC often destroyed their retirement funds if they had any - but the ambience of those gigs gives me the creeps.
JAMC were crap live when they were big, but Psychocandy was a cattle goad of a record in the midst of the bleakly smug Thatcher years and I still love it for that. It well documents a weird period when I lived like a junkie in central London and worked in the Home Counties media.
I'll be going if I can to 1. see if I can stay upright for it, and 2. see if the Chain have learned to play live or remember the songs. (However, it may clash with the arrival of our first grandbaby: if so, no contest!)

There are so many layers to my “home” emotions and connections, and Christchurch being what it is they are constantly stirred. This is another home – taken the Festival of Light night at the Botanic Gardens in winter. It was a heart-singing evening.
Jackson, Photos is just what I need. It suits me fine. Found a whole lot more tools like sharpening last night. New to track down the "how to resize" so I can post on the likes of Facebook.

Add this to the gutting of Ecan and the Christchurch CBD debacle and suspension of democracy and I despair at the course New Zealand democracy is on.
We need some form of constitution because our governing bodies, local and national, can no longer be trusted to behave within the spirit of the law as well as the letter. New Zealanders have been used to a rather benign paternalism in their elected officials. However, with the advent of the TPPA, this country's citizens and our democracy and its conventions need some form of legal protection.
