...attending rugby games at Lancaster Park*.

*And no, I will never call it anything else.

Why not? Though I'm also wary of corporates attempting to buy culture by simply attaching their name to important stuff like sports, wasn't Lancaster just another conniving squatocrat?

Don't forget the Jedi and the alternative rugby commentary. His stuff is highly entertaining.

Agreed, just wanted to plug Dropkicks separately. I think the RRT has lost a little by losing the Ginger.

Of course, as a woman, I clearly know nothing about being a sports fan.

    /slightly bitter, yes.

Agreed. Gender's not determinative, it's obversly correlated in rugby perhaps, but that's for lots of other reasons. I've been to plenty of netball internationals that prove women are passionate and vocal partisans and competitors. I'm sure you didn't need another voice, but thought I'd chip in my five cents... incidentally, I reckon the foremost commentators on NZ rugby are the Dropkicks, Grant Fox, Spiro Zavos and Tracey Nelson.

Ha! That's funny, because as you wrote it I was thinking "he better say the Giants and the... oh he did!"

I get the broad point about hyperbole, but there's a hell of a lot more rugby played that NFL. Still, the bestest culture is a drag. That said, I'm picking there's a fair degree of agreement the best game of Tri-nations rugby in recent years was the 2000 Bledisloe.

Cricket here in Aussie's been interesting but, I confess to enjoying Australia's loss a little too much. Sydney test may yet produce a result? I'm with you on the sun though, it's raging hot at present which has caused me to to hide... air-conditioning is the only thing that makes it tolerable and it's just a coincidence that pubs have the best aircon!

On rugby matters, it seems as if John Mitchell's learned little about team management and may not last too much longer at the Force.

  • Current Status: Holidays,

Why thank you, kind sir. I look forward to more of your well-measured and erudite postings from Sydney this year. :-)

That's the nicest thing anyone's said to me all year :>

But seriously, there's nothing well-measured about me tonight. I'm just f**king hot! Where's the forecast late change and storm already!

while dugongs have fluked tails and the males have tusks).

Advice for any parents visiting Sydney, if you're minded to see the dugongs at Sydney aquarium, go really really early - opens at 9am - else expect obscene delays.

  • Current Status: Holidays,

I'm hoping for a watershed year, feel like I'm spiralling up and out of something, a bit like I've been underwater awhile and am heading for the surface, expecting unfamiliar air. I won't arrive at the same place I went in.

What a lovely phrase Kerry. I admire your positivity.

  • Hard News: The Interesting Party,

Still tying up loose ends, sometime PA sports-blogger Grant Robertson has his maiden speech up on YouTube. It's a really nice speech with some dry humour and, at about the 12 min mark, a deeply welcome commitment to special education issues. I'm so glad to have someone like Grant in Parliament.

Hear hear. Many can and should claim to be Grant's friend. I'll join the list. Having someone like Grant in parliament almost makes me think of other career options.

Merry Christmas and Happy NY to you and your's Russell. PAS is a vital piece of cultural capital, you (and by association, we) should be proud.
