Basically their main job is to represent, and they have a lot of leeway in how they do that, and the mechanism for the constituents to reward or punish them is already in place.
I think that's an argument at cross purposes to what is happening with Carter. If he was working but just not sitting in the house that's still working. If he's on leave, he's not doing that work at all, so it's like me taking annual leave or sick leave.
I don't mind that, but there's a valid question to be asked of how long an MP can be paid to be an MP but not actually do the work. 2 months? 6 months? a year? Surely at some stage the speaker has to say to their party leader "umm, what are we paying this guy for again?"

A mayoral candidate wants to spend $$$ on free citywide Wifi in Wellington. Which seems a waste of resources when we already have 3G. And what will stop people using it instead of home internet to download petabytes of movies?
There's free public wifi in Dunedin's octagon. I presume it's the city council's set up.
I think they get around people abusing it by clamping the speed down to something not much faster than dialup.

Oh, I really really hate being right: Time to impeach Judge Vaughn Walker.
What a fascinating wee article.
In addition, Judge Walker is an open homosexual, and should have recused himself from this case due to his obvious conflict of interest.
I'm happy with that if any judge that was married also had to recuse themselves. OK, not really happy, but it would at least feel fairer.

happens to be gay, so I guess we can predict the character assassination to come from the usual suspects...
Sadly it's this last fact about him which will no doubt lead to death threats and who knows what other stupid shit, over the fifteen complimentary things you said before that which are the things that qualify him for the job.
But yay for wiping that obnoxious law off the books, may it stay off and may the other states quickly have to remove their equivalent laws.

To me the choice is really between 'the world' staying there and knowing that they're not doing very much, or leaving, and knowing that it's probably going to get a crapload worse.
They're both really shitty options, to me countries sending their armed forces in at tremendous expense and loss of life needs to have a higher standard than "we'll possibly keep it being less fucked up than it could be".
That all being said, if everyone pulls out and Afghanistan goes to the complete crap pot, won't we all reasonably be saying that some sort of peacekeeping force needs to be back in there to stop massacres and a dozen other crappy things going on?
Seems to me that all doors lead to "oh for fucks sake" and we really just need to choose the best way for everyone to get screwed as little as possible for as short a time as we can.

Maybe it's fiction?
We're not allowed to be annoyed by fiction that doesn't make sense?

Transportation does use a lot more energy than lighting.
Yeah. But if energy is so restricted that it effectively functions as money, wouldn't electric opening doors be pretty much non-existant?

Kyle, even if they did buy their own bus I think they'd have to have a certain number of passengers (2 or 3 depending) to qualify ;-)
They could rent some poor people surely? It's so hard being rich, on top of taxes this bus lane persecution really is too much.
-
Couldn't they just buy their own bus? Much easier than convincing other people, surely.

I'd like to see more stuff like the Alice in Wonderland app and less stuff like Flipbook
Is it a zero sum game? I wasn't aware that anyone was predicting that there would be a shortage of ipad apps over the next year, all no doubt different and from all over the spectrum. Flipbook doesn't come pre-loaded on the machine as the default browser after all.
