  • Hard News: Citizens,

you've got to wonder if the only way you last in Winston First is having any sense of irony, or shame, surgically excised.

Or a brave, Python-esque commitment to spreading ironic political humour whilst maintaining a straight face...

  • Hard News: The Debate and Onwards,

Of what I saw, she did well enough. Hollow statements all over the show but no obvious gaffs and that's all she needed.
Biden won it for me - on topic, knowledgeable etc etc even if a US politico tendency to schmaltz still remained - but I'm not sure that Palin's folksy stylings won't play quite well in the US.

SEE! SHE DIDN'T BALLS IT UP! is probably enough of a headline for her anyway...

Steve, when I researched grinders at that price point, this was where I ended up going...

Banks will still lend on espresso machines, won't they?

Sure will - they'll bundle the grinder loans with more stable Kitchenaid mixer loans and risky derivatives of automated handheld garlic crushers and sell them to Italian dog walkers.

I think I've tried a similar CDO joke here before actually. I need to get out more

Fact checking - you're doing it wrong. But it certainly seems like there was fault all along that chain of rubbish...

Re grinders: if it's for espresso Tom everyone seems to say burr or nothing. And they seem to start at $400ish... I got a "cheaper" machine to get the grinder and am happy enough.

Paul - private equity at least has the edge that they are invested in actual businesses. Unfortunately they tend to have loaded them with so much debt that as:
    a. that debt funding becomes more expensive
    b. economic growth prospects for that business dry up
the model becomes untenable. Ability to repay the debt gets very constrained.

  • Hard News: The Debate and Onwards,

    oh and this!
I'm, in that sense, a federalist, where I believe that states should have more say in the laws of their lands and individual areas.

Isn't that the EXACT OPPOSITE of federalism?

    a flaming Maoist

Now THAT sounds like a delicious cocktail...

Palin couldn't name anything but Roe v. Wade.

Asked what other Supreme Court decisions she disagreed with, Alaska's governor couldn't name any.

"Well, let's see. There's, of course, in the great history of America rulings there have been rulings, that's never going to be absolute consensus by every American," Palin said. "And there are, those issues, again, like Roe v. Wade where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So you know, going through the history of America, there would be others but ...."

Asked again to name a decision she disagreed with, Palin replied: "Well, I could think of, of any again, that could be best dealt with on a more local level. Maybe I would take issue with. But you know, as mayor, and then as governor and even as a vice president, if I'm so privileged to serve, wouldn't be in a position of changing those things but in supporting the law of the land as it reads today."

she can't name a single magazine or newspaper she has read:

That's because she has read 'all of them'.
