Hard News: Mandela, in reply to
I remember a Bromhead cartoon from that time, of Tauroa being led by the nose in South Africa while wearing a huge pair of rose-coloured glasses. On his return he quietly confounded his critics. While I don’t recall too many other details, I have the impression that when he stepped down from his role as race relations conciliator in 1986 he enjoyed pretty much universal respect.
That’s certainly an interesting photo. Somehow I have no recollection of Colin Kay having taken a stand on the tour.

I would not want the likes of … Hiwi Tauroa
Are you sure about that? Here’s a picture of him leading an anti-Tour march in 1981.
Tauroa copped a bit of flak prior to the tour, to the point of being tagged as “Kiwi Touroa”, by advocating that it go ahead. On his return from a hosted propaganda visit to South Africa he changed his mind.

it would be a huge gesture of reconciliation if a National government would invite the most famous figurehead of our own resistance to Apartheid.
Endorse our own version of premature antifascists? One has to maintain standards.

Mandela had his own house in the grounds of the medium security Victor Verster prison. It's been preserved as a national monument. Prior to that he had a roof garden at the huge maximum security Pollsmoor, which was a privilege he'd been denied in his years on Robben Island. Today Pollsmoor holds almost twice as many inmates as it was designed for.

seeing him released from Robben Island on live TV in 1990.
What that video shows is Mandela's release from Victor Verster Prison in the Western Cape, where he spent the last 14 months of his imprisonment. Prior to that he'd been incarcerated for over 6 years in Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town, after being transferred from Robben Island.

Legal Beagle: Not burglary?, in reply to
The type of people that own holiday homes don’t take well to low level crimes and minor inconveniences not being investigated when they are the victim
Probably of no real consequence when it comes to finer points of law, but a surprising (to me) number of Queenstown 'homes' appear to be owned by corporates, for presumably business-related recreational purposes.

How well did that anti-Lianne campaign go, Cameron?

here’s a salute to the golden age of hard rock.
Very nice indeed, though I'm a tad disappointed that the TV's not plugged in. My understanding, based entirely on hearsay, was that you got enough extension leads to allow for the drop, so the working TV gave a great rainbow splash on impact with the pool below.

… a chuckle from the host (on Newstalk ZB).
The mirthless talkback laugh, somewhere between a hiccup and a death-rattle.

I think Graeme is wrong in this instance, but one of the reasons for engaging with him and his argument on this thread is that he’s built up a long history of careful engaged thoughtful argument.
That's certainly been true when he's spoken from his considerable expertise. To me it's not simply a case of being wrong in this instance, but of having moved beyond his area of competence.
