  • Hard News: Be careful what you wish for, in reply to David Hood,

It is a bit more complicated than that- at the moment Trump doesn’t have a plan, and what plan happens is done by congress with Presidential signify.

To be fair, he did promise to immediately repeal it. Which would be bizarrely stupid, but there you go.

  • Speaker: A Singer Must Die - Leonard…,

And maybe even more this one. Leonard certainly had timing.

Give me back my broken heart
My mirrored room, my secret life
    It's lonely here
There's no one left to torture

    Give me absolute control
    Over every living soul
    And lie beside me, baby
    That's an order

    Give me crack, anal sex
Take the only tree that's left
    Stuff it up the hole
    In your culture

Give me back the Berlin Wall
Give me Stalin and St. Paul
    I've seen the future, brother
    It is murder

    Things are going to slide
    Slide in all directions
    Won't be nothing
    Nothing you can measure anymore
    The blizzard
    The blizzard of the world
    Has crossed the threshold
And it's overturned the order of the soul

  • Speaker: A Singer Must Die - Leonard…, in reply to David Hood,

After his death, I was thinking “First we take Manhattan” was very much in the spirit of the U.S. election. I see Billboard Magazine has felt similar- suggesting “First we take Manhattan” and “Everybody Knows” as post-election songs.

I thought of this one ...

  • Speaker: A Singer Must Die - Leonard…, in reply to Gareth,

Thanks Grant – a nice tribute. My “first Cohen” was a little earlier than yours, as you might expect

Yes, mine too. It was either Songs From a Room or the Songs of Leonard Cohen compilation. We'd make the usual "slash your wrists" jokes, but really, there's such a vigorous sense of humour in it all.

I’d always got the “cokey” reference, but had thought “kick the gong” was a euphemism for raising hell.

    Oi!

You and Ian! No spoilers for Episode 3!

    ;-)

I read Cracked semi-regularly. As an aside, I find it really flipping bizarre that some of the best stories and analysis I’ve read in the last couple of years are coming from a self-proclaimed ‘dick jokes’ comedy website.

Indeed. This isn't the first time.

How Half of America Lost Its F**cking Mind

By the executive editor of Cracked, who grew up in what is now Trump country.

It paints a picture that dovetails perfectly with what the Gallup survey found – and earns my sympathy to a far greater degree than any of the sodding racist old-left bullshit I've been batting away on Facebook today. These people are actually suffering social problems and cultural anxiety, it's just a shame they went for Trump to fix it.

Exit poll data visualised by NY Times shows which groups voted for Trump.

That's fascinating – especially the minorities graphic. Demonstrates that Hispanics have not historically gone hugely Democratic. That's a more recent trend. Again, I'm left thinking was a remarkable candidate Obama has been. He didn't quite create a new normal, but the Dems have the Latino vote in a way they really did not in 2004.

Are they as surprised as we are?

I've seen some reports suggesting they are.

I've added this graph to the main main post because it's so interesting. It makes what happened look much more like a return to the mean as Obama leaves the stage than a Trump surge.
