  • OnPoint: Manufacturing Dissent,

    Yeah, just the linguistic stuff. That's the only work of his that I've studied in any detail.

  • Speaker: How to Look Good as a Nazi,

    yeah, I'm not necessarily advocating that Anke should better direct energy towards becoming an enthusiast NAZI hunter, but of punishment for the drunk students or assistance to the wartime survivor who lost his job for refusing to wear the the 'NAZI' shirt, I know which cause I'd be getting behind. It seems far more serious.

    I'd only trust them if a body of sound trials shows they work, at which point we are leaving woo behind and back in science territory.

    I'd only trust them if they worked on me.
    I like where you're coming from here Russell, good on you.
    Timely and well researched post Dylan.
    and Jackie thanks, you hit the nail on the head with this:

    It never fails to surprise me that people still don't get it. There are many things that happen in this universe, this world, that we just don't know how or why they happen.

    There's a certain irony that those who will never acknowledge and enjoy the benefits of 'faith based' treatment are usually skeptics.

    Hope your husband keeps on trucking for a good while longer there Jackie.

  • OnPoint: Manufacturing Dissent,

    why is the rate of imprisonment meant to continue escalating?

    Anyone else see alcohol prohibition on the horizon?

    Speaking of Chomsky, few other widely respected academics have had so many theories disproven.

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/education/2950094/Students-ordered-to-pay-fine-visit-museum

    * Visit the Holocaust Museum in Wellington and possibly the German Embassy at their own expense;

    * Pay a fine of $200;

    * Submit a 2000 word essay on a topic determined by the chair of the committee;

    * Two students who wore the most offensive T-shirts also had to complete 150 hours of community service for the university.

    I've nothing against this punishment. However I'm struck by the fact that it's a bigger punishment than many NAZIs ever got. So I'm getting the impression here that we're no longer chasing NAZIs, the battle lines have been redrawn.

    Of all the campaigns to partake in, while protagonists of that war still breath free air. It doesn't make sense for German's to globally reprioritize their feelings of national inadequacy above the quest for real justice against the real criminals that brought them their inadequacy. Good taste is not more valuable than human life. There is a far more righteous crusade to appease the national shame.

    The message you have sent to surviving German war criminals Anke is startling.

    I don't find what the Lincoln students did worthy of any merit. But I respect their freedom of expression more than the freedom of those who administered the atrocities of world war 2.

    Anyone who is in two minds about what to mock and what not should listen to the brilliant history-buff, Dan Carlin. His answer is simple: as long as there are still people alive who bear the number on their arm -- it's not a joke. That tattoo is real.

    "I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately."

    George Carlin.

    What they're "negotiating" is money that would otherwise go to real development initiatives, whose founders put forward proposals and presented a real case for the economic and social benefits that would flow from the finding they sought.

    I"m reminded of the recent $5.8million gift to Weta digital..

    All games are available free online nowadays if you look in the right places.
