I'm constantly underwhelmed by the lack of vision, guts, and forward-thinking on public works projects in Auckland and NZ in general. The stadium, tank farm, harbour crossing, whatever.
Can someone please just grow some balls (or ovaries or whatever required gonad) and build something spectacular that I can gaze at? I hate having to go to foreign countries to have my heart quickened by concrete and steel.
This may be divulging a little too much, but I literally choke up when presented with beautiful architecture like this

Cunning plan: I make minor technical errors, thus forcing geeks to register with my website and correct me.
Everyone knows that the most authoritative comments on the interwebs come from real experts correcting bloggers :-D

I can happily say I had no issue setting up a $199 Dick Smith box (same as a Zinwell apparently). And yes, well pleased with the quality of the signal and the EPG.
PVR-wise, there appears to be at least one cheap and cheerful Freeview box with PVR listed on Trademe. Not officially sanctioned, but it looks fine, and uses external USB for storage, so is effectively unlimited.

Damien: Bingo
(Actually it doesn't say anywhere that it does Freeview, but I'm assuming it's a Freeview Satellite decoder + PVR)

Bah... guess who bought a Freeview box on Friday for the Rubgy.
Still, can't complain, it does 480p so it's already nice and sharp compared to my old stock Sky box.
I just wonder why TVNZ/Freeview won't pony up for the bandwidth to run HD over satellite? Is it really that much cheaper to do it over UHF?

Double Meh. I guess now rather than fighting for sane laws, we return to our position of praying for the swift demise of the current Big Media business models?
Are there still laws on the books protecting the rights of buggy whip manufacturers?

Great article, Rob - ta for the link. Guilty as charged, as a firstborn... married to a firstborn...mother of a firstborn.. and very glad to have our little revolutionary/convention-buster on board to shake things up a bit.
Cue flashback to Christmas discussions (the good ones!). As fourthborn of the greater distributed (lesser spotted?) Gracewood clan, I'm finding our firstborn totally normal, and am awaiting eagerly the second so I can help him/her/it dispel any myths re following in footsteps or being of lesser quality.
Strange how we both seem to focus on it in our own ways from either end of the spectrum eh?
On a slightly more sad note, my in-laws second-born helped them to realise that yes, firstborn is definitely autistic, and all those things people told them "just worked" did indeed "just work" with a non-autistic child.

As a side note, anyone who subscribes to the NZ Police comms centre emails will know that we had our very own suspected car bomb in New Zealand last night.
Turns out it was just some hippy with a water-to-hydrogen converter in their boot!

"A "gathering crime tide" is not a synonym for a "crime wave', as Mabbett and Mok seem to think... A tide goes in and out..."
That is just... awesome. No wonder all those waves just keep piling up all over the place. I must add "crime tide" to my lexicon immediately.
Next time we get burgled: "It's ok kids, it was just a crime tide.. the telly will be back in 11.5 hours"

A yes sorry same episode. The HBO link is bigger and clearer though :)
