  • Random Play: BDO: Field of Dreams (and Nightmares),

Serj Tankian's band was very well rehearsed, very tight, they sounded like a very loud CD, but the man is so far up his own arse he could wear himself as a hat. Seriously, what was that stuff? It came across as the product of someone who nobody ever says "NO" to. Think heavy metal opera and you wouldn't be too far off the mark.

And I liked the Living End no matter what anyone else says. Always have, always will. It might be an Aussie thing though, maybe I lived there long enough to be infected.

  • Hard News: The Big Day Out, Auckland, 2009,

I'm going to differ quite a bit then - I loved the Living End, haven't seen them for 11 years and they played a decent set to not enough people. The crowd wasn't big enough but at the back left of the stage you could see a bunch of the other bands (Dropkicks, Bullet For My Valentine) boogying along.

Hot Chip though -- yeesh, we stayed for a few minutes through what sounded like the short-haired bloke having a piano lesson and left in a hurry for the stage next door.

My favourite bit of Pendulum was that the crowd was so big you could clearly see the ripple as the sound waves went out - the folks at the back were leaping up and down at quite a different time to the folks at the front. I'd love to get a hi-speed video of it.

  • Hard News: Conversation Starters,

Forbidding the kind of wine shop where they can actually make good recommendations, for example?

Yeah, good point. The hole in the wall cases-of-Woodstock place near my last house can go to hell, but any law that gets rid of that little shop in Hillcrest (Hamilton) next to the cycle track is just wrong!

  • Southerly: England's Pleasant Pastures Seen,

I reckon NZ's about an F-stop brighter than the UK.

An old boss of mine worked as a technician at Kodak in his younger days and told me that film spec'd for this part of the world was different from the northern hemisphere because the light is brighter and "bluer". If you took photos here and then had your films developed back in the UK they would simply look wrong as the processing was slightly different.

  • Hard News: Speaking Freely,

I have one of those little Pinnacle TV USB sticks that does Freeview HD in my laptop. It works fine given an external aerial - the Olympics was great - but the little toy stick-on aerial they include in the box is useless.

On Windows the software is a complete PITA, it's fairly unreliable, requires registration that locks it to the PC and all that proprietary malarkey. Stephen Judd reports that the latest version of Ubuntu shows TV perfectly well in VLC Player though, so that's cool.

  • Hard News: Pomp and Circumstance,

Guilty as charged. It's amazing how low an information-crazed young geek would sink for a set of encyclopaedias in thos distant pre-Interweb days.

Hey, me too! Although it was Selwyn Toogood when I was on it. And I got a year's subscription to a very worthy set of educational magazines for taking part :-|

Don't see any indigenous Brazilians or Colombians fanging around, do you?

Juan Pablo Montoya, currently tearing up the track in NASCAR but ex-Willams. Previously Roberto Guerrero. There have been 28 Brazilian F1 drivers. Also several Mexicans, a Chilean, an Indian, a Malaysian, the list goes on.

  • Cracker: A Halloween story too cute not…,

After several years of harrumphing and ignoring the doors (last year the little bastards let themselves in because we forgot to lock it) we actually bought a few sweets this year. And... nobody showed up.

    Ah well, more for me.
