  • NZ Sign Language news,

    http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=d87lZzrUmL8

Members of the New Zealand Deaf community have been anxiously following the tragic Emma Agnew story.

But as many deaf people have New Zealand Sign Language as their first language, they may struggle reading English-language news reports or subtitles on TV news.

So the Deaf Association have been getting transcripts of TV news reports, translating them into NZSL, making videos and putting them up on YouTube within hours of the original news broadcast.

    Check out the videos here:

This is the power of the internet.

  • Speaker: Singing g against the E chord,

Danielle, Robyn, you're comments on down-sizing your music collection has freaked-out the "inner Rob Fleming" in the male music geeks here. ;)

I won't mention, then, the times in the past when I sold a few CDs in order to pay the rent. Though, having said that, I mostly only ever sold stuff I hated. Mostly...

But it is my inner Rob(yn) Fleming that's keeping me from ripping and selling my CDs.

  • Speaker: Singing g against the E chord,

If I could get rid of every CD I own and put them all on some mighty mega-hard-drive, I would in a heartbeat.

Yeah, I dream of similar. I have heaps of CDs and nowhere near enough shelf space to house them all (ditto books). As a result, all my CDs are stacked up, making most of them difficult to get at.

But I'm not sure if I really would stick them all on a hard drive and get rid of the physical recordings. As nice as it is to dream of a clean, sleek minimalist haus, it is somehow comforting to have a big old stack of music in the corner of my lounge.

  • Island Life: The doctor will see you now,

I'm definitely not a fan of French coffee (the one exception being an espresso I had in McD's in Lyon - go figure) but the coffee in Italy is OMIGOD

I wonder if this is because it's the Italians with their fancy espresso machines that have come to dominate coffee here - it's what we consider good.

And, curiously enough, I also had good coffee in a French McDonalds. But I also had a lovely cafe au lait at the old bus depot in Noumea.

  • Cracker: Chaghcharan: Three Little Pigs,

Oh, I don't really think Damian has a camera of oppression. I'm really enjoying his writing and photos.

Would anyone normally write about the thick auburn hair of the girls shining in the sunshine? Or their colourful dresses and chunky jewellery? Or their suspicious yet fragile faces?

That's what photos do (for me).

You made a little girl cry with your camera of oppression! Shame on you, evil Western tourist/journalist!

  • Drawing on Walls,

    Wow, that was really good.

I get out with my camera and take lots of photos of the ever changing Auckland street art, and watching this reminded me of being behind a still camera and the walking and discovering, and observation and selection of the stuff up on walls.

And I can't quite put my finger on it, but Wellington street art has a different feeling to Auckland. It's... more fun? Softer? Less aggro? Hmm...

Hamilton in the late 80s boasted a punk band called Hitler's Cock.

May I hilariously point out that it was actually spelt Hitler's Kock?

  • Hard News: Back in the mainstream,

    Earlier I said:

Funnily enough, they're "fans" not "friends". Facebook lets "public figures" create pages that are halfway between a personal profile and a group.

It looks like this is a brand new Facebook feature, cos when I just logged in now, I found this notice:

Your favorite bands, businesses, and products are coming to Facebook. Check out Dave Matthews Band, become a fan of (RED), or search for your favorite brands.

    Woo! Dave Matthews Band!!!!

    Ahem.

I like this better cos I'd feel weird adding, say, Nandor Tanczos's personal Facebook account, but I'd feel much more comfortable (and less creepy/stalky) adding a professional Facebook listing (if he had one).

Kevin Rudd, famously, has 20,000 friends on Facebook

Funnily enough, they're "fans" not "friends". Facebook lets "public figures" create pages that are halfway between a personal profile and a group.

This is a good idea, but I can't find anything official from any NZ politicians. Not even my local MP - a blogger - is on Facebook.

As long as I don't get "Click here to be a pirate/ninja/vampire" spam, I'd be happy to have a political Facebook friend.
