  • Southerly: Religious 'Innovations' for Christmas,

Somewhere I have a number of photos a friend of mine took of a window display at a chemist in Rotorua.

On display was a number of vibrators - including one that looked like a cob of corn (!). The chemist was trying very hard to promote them as personal massagers, and there were all these handwritten cards with stuff like "Suitable for whole family!" "Use at home! At school! Take one to church!"

Excuse me while I take my vibe-o-corn to church.

  • Drawing on Walls,

Ooh, I had a good tour of Wellington graffiti spots yesterday. I was really impressed by Graffiti Alley, especially because of the shoes and ironing board that had been incorporate into the graffiti works. Photos are here. My favourite is this message to the po-po.

  • Hard News: Mighty Indeed,

because i'd pay for a copy of that dr. who number...

It's available on The Complete Blam Blam Blam (which is an excellent collection), but I certainly wouldn't say no to a blam-blam-bootleg of the night...

(oh, and BIG SHOUT OUT to robyn. great to meet you)

(Lovely to meet you too! It was really good to meet some of the Wellingtonista and PA System regulars.)

Why are Wellington bars so much better than Auckland bars, on average?

Yeah, in the last couple of days I have been to more excellent bars in Wellington than I ever have in Auckland.

Tonight I had the Wellingtonista-nominated poached pear punch from Superfino, and it was deliciously fresh and fruity.

Wikipedia sez no, but it was in the top 10.

  • Hard News: Mighty Indeed,

Here's a question you may have had: which NZ band had a song go to number one the first week of release with no commercial radio airplay?

Was it Head Like A Hole with "Fish Across Face"?

  • Hard News: Mighty Indeed,

I think in retrospect that "24 hour diner" should have been higher up the list of things Wellington needs, after the last bunch of us got kicked out of a kebab shop at 4am.

Even Taupo has a 24-hour diner! There should be a place where you can just go and get some crap to eat, and be able to sit down without having to employ mindtricks on the staff ("We're not eating it here. We're just sitting down as we wait for him... and, whoops, I accidentally ate my felafel.")

  • Hard News: Mighty Indeed,

OMFG, that was a good night. I managed to meet most of the rogue Wellingtonistas I hadn't met yet, as well as a few people who were like "Ah, Robyn, I'm a stalker! Uh, I mean, I've been reading your blog for ages."

The quiz was fun - I totally pwned my table by knowing what the 1480 Kroozers were and the bonus question with that one.

Plus it was so good seeing the Blams playing again. I reckon I had more fun last night then I did at their King's Arms gig earlier in the year, and the "There is no depression in NZ' finale was magical.

Now I am going to enjoy the fruits of the capital.

  • Hard News: Farce About,

True. It really comes from the piano line in the second verse.

Ah, now it's making more sense. I had a really close listen to "Bittersweet Symphony" and I think I can hear the actual sample - it's the bit at the beginning of the first clip with the smooth violins and the chimes.

The piano bit is interesting because the Verve's violin plays 12 notes per bit*, while the piano only uses eight - the Verve's version fills in the gaps, while the piano is a bit more stuttery.

    * I'm sure there are many technical terms I could be using, but music theory and me don't get along.

  • Hard News: Farce About,

    here's a short, lo-res sample.

Ooh, thanks for that. It's clear where the basic chords and melody structure comes from, but the main violin bit that gets repeated over and over in "Bittersweet Symphony" doesn't come from that sample - the Verve made it.
