  • Hard News: Never let the facts ...,

    Does McGillicuddy Serious still exist?

MMP kind of killed it (if your vote counts, there's not much point using it on the joke party), but there is a current MP who was a McGillicuddy candidate in 1993.

  • Speaker: Two Ticks,

I read this post yesterday and it seemed a bit confusing and it made my brain hurt, but I stuck with it. Then later I was reading about a Jezebel reader who went to an Iowa caucus and she was talking about standing in the groups on the floor of the town hall and I knew exactly what that all meant. So thank you, Graeme.

  • Hard News: Another nail in the coffin of…,

...the sound, which was shrieky and very, very loud. Jeez.

About halfway through the Bird Nest Roys first song I had to put earplugs in. Unlike at some gigs, where earplugs seem to suck the soul out of the music, it was loud enough that it just sounded like a normal rock gig.

But I had a good time, anyway. Especially seeing King Loser and remembering how chaotically cool Celia is.

wouldn't it be nice ... for the Bird Nest Roys cult to actually be able to download their album legally?

With the Flying Nun website currently down (*ahem*), I had to turn elsewhere when I was looking for a Bird Nest Roys website to link to on my blog. I was surprised at all the little fansites out there full of music fans who'll drool over even just one mp3 of the Roys. There's an audience.

  • Hard News: The Daily Embarrassment,

Bird Nest Roys are playing with the Ghost Club at the Rising Sun on Auckland on Wednesday night.

Oh my! I haven't heard much of their stuff (funny, that), but I am Roys-curious, so I'll be there. And Celia is going to be playing too!

Where, if not on Lorne Street, was Simple Cottage then?

High Street! (Not that I ever went there.)

  • Hard News: Rockin',

It's been a really good year on PA System. The community has found its feet and is my #1 favourite website to keep reloading during the day.

I've really enjoyed the two '07 Karajoz Great Blends - especially seeing the LEDs at the last one - and I had a ridiculously good time at the PA/Wellingtonista do.

Election year PA and PA System is going to be so good!

    Merry Christmas to all!

  • Hard News: Random,

How the hell did they figure all that out without being told?

At the beginning of every episode of Sensing Murder, they say that during the psychic sessions, only correct information is confirmed to the psychic by the production crew, which suggets it could go like this:

Psychic: I'm sensing a woman. Is it a woman?
    Crew: ...
    P: Oh, it's a man's mother telling me about her son. It's a man.
    C: Yes!
    P: Is his name Andrew?
    C: ...
    P: Is his name Barry?
    C: ...
    P: Is his name Craig?
    C: ...
    P: Is his name Dave?
    C: Yes!
P: Mm, his mother is saying, "My boy Davey, he was murdered!!!"

  • Hard News: Random,

No doubt another glossy that dupes advertisers out of their cold hard cash and ends up in the bin unread with the publishers quickly fading away.

It's a strange genre of magazine - the kind that deliberately attempts to go for a rool high claaaass reader. But the main hallmark of these magazines seems to be really poor subediting. Not just apostrophe catastrophes, but overall sloppy writing.

And then you end up with editors of such magazines getting annoyed when their publication's spelling/grammar/syntax is criticised because, dammit, that's just a trivial typo and, like, you should be paying attention to the advertorial on the posh car rental place, not quibbling over apostrophes.

  • Hard News: Random,

what is that first sentence supposed to mean?

Perhaps he means to say something like this:

[Let's] stop the underfunding of the higher income areas and [stop giving funding] to the poor areas [above higher income areas].

Yeah, them po' folks have had it too easy for far too long (?)

And I wonder, are these the same "poor folks" he mocks in his press release - the ones who don't enjoy their weekends as much as the residents of Auckland's wealthiest homes?

Actually, I'm sure I don't come even close to qualifying as one of the "rich prick" Weekend readers, but I enjoy my weekdays and weekends.

  • Hard News: Random,

Mr Taillie has a blog, where he expresses "random" views.

Of course, looking at his blog, it seems that all of his posts are restricted to the area of sales, business and the NZ economy. OMG! Randomz!!!

I'd like to see an actual random blog, with entries on such topics as even-toed ungulates, Berlin-Mitte, sludge metal, representation theory and Saskatchewan Highway 782 (selected courtesy of hitting the "Random article" link at Wikipedia).
