  • Capture: Coast to Coast,

I would like to add that yesterday Dunedin wound up with some of the freakiest weather I seen in a long time here. A quarter of an hour continuous thunder and lightening is very abnormal. I didn’t manage to get any of the lightening on camera though.

We apparently landed through that storm on the flight down from Wellington on Xmas Eve. Everyone when we got off was talking about it, but didn't even notice it on the plane.

  • Hard News: Media data,

Anyone in advertising know how regarded ads are in streaming land these days?

I don't think it applies to ondemand, but the youtube adverts where you can click 'skip' on them after 5 seconds - massive feedback for the advertiser and the company doing their adverts as to whether people are actually sitting there and watching the advert or skipping it. This is new to online - TV we know that people avoid watching adverts in general, but we haven't tended to know which ones they deliberately watch.

  • Cracker: Stoned in Charge,

Any chance you have a link or citation for the Canadian study on fatal crashes? An odds ratio of 40 sounds quite close to 5*8 (odds for cannabis * odds for alcohol), suggesting that either no interaction was included in the model, or that the interaction was small or non-significant, which would be an interesting result.

Possibly. Or possibly there is an amplification factor from mixing the two, like some drugs and alcohol shouldn't be taken together because they react badly.

In this instance, your risk might be amplified because alcohol increases your risky driving and lack of awareness, and cannabis reduces your reaction time (I'm just guessing about impacts). Therefore you're more likely to end up in a bad situation because of alcohol and more likely to not be able to get yourself out of it because of the cannabis.

  • Legal Beagle: Not burglary?,

The type of people that own holiday homes don’t take well to low level crimes and minor inconveniences not being investigated when they are the victim

I suspect the police have paid a bit more attention to this case because the victim is a prominent NZer.

  • Hard News: How do you sleep?,

I haven’t slept more than a couple of hours at a time since having little children. Never relearnt the art.

From about 6 months I only slept six or seven hours a night, waking at about 5.30 am every day.

This trained my mother to only sleep about five hours a night, always waking at about 5am.

I moved on when I was a few years old and started to sleep more normally, my mother kept the same sleep pattern for over 30 years. It got her through working full time and studying full time, and numerous other busy times in her life.

Finally about 5 years ago as their life started to slow down she went on some sleeping pills to break the habit. A few weeks of that and I think she had her first 7 hours of sleep in a few decades.

  • Hard News: Narcissists and bullies,

Like the one Bazley conducted half a decade ago after the Louise Nicholas complaint, you mean?

Well somewhat, but not quite. The Bazley report was a one off, with yearly audits to see how they're going on the recommendations.

The Bazley report has identified some serious issues and now we're waiting for the police to deal with them all. The power and timing is back on the police now.

In order to deal with systemic corruption a solution is to appoint a board of outside experts, with wide-ranging legal powers, independent counsel and investigators, and require police and other individuals to testify like a court of law. And the ability to lay charges itself. Ongoing until it's happy it's dealt with the problem. Power is taken away from the police since it's assessed they can't deal with their internal issues.

I'm not suggesting that as a solution here, this feels more like a culture problem rather than corruption.

What would be the advantage of using G3 instead of FM?

I'm big at work at the moment about how things going digital shouldn't be about transferring from one to the other (straight analogue to digital), they should be about enhancement - how does digital make things better.

So a good player over 3G could rewind to relisten, would have metadata and so could have a button to automatically go purchase a song that you like, could have a button to automatically phone up talkback and cut the radio as you get put through.

And have several thousand listening options.

You could also mix and match your radio stations. Fav music station is some place in the UK, but like your NZ news? The player could play the music from overseas and then kick back to an hourly NZ news bulletin from Radio NZ. Or detect when a song finished and then go to your news elsewhere.

I understand company loyalty, and I understand natural defensiveness - I've done both in my time. But Radio Live really need a period of reflection, because it's not just about one bad interview. The slow, painful reaction to it - the station not "getting it" - is what damns them.

Given that it was, I think three sets of people doing screwed up interviews, there's something systemic wrong at the station. A bit of education would be a good start.

  • Hard News: Narcissists and bullies,

I called for his resignation earlier, but I now think that he wants to do well. Still, he advanced through the ranks knowing about the attitudes that existed and didn’t challenge them.

That's a complicated problem. If you're trying to bring about change to a heirarchical organisation, you largely need to do it from the top. Getting to the top while being uppity about all the people above you not doing a good job is difficult? Leaving those principles at the door and trying to compromise?

Often these organisations need help from outside to turn the ship - commissions of inquiry, independent corruption boards etc.

  • Hard News: Narcissists and bullies,

Update: Police comms say that Marshall has been responding personally to complaints made via the police website (which I’m told requires contact details).

Well that is bizarre. Maybe this is why he didn't have time to be properly briefed for Campbell Live the other night?
