Hard News: What Now?, in reply to
The Greens have been doing this all week, though not with a huge base. No doubt other parties have as well.
Actually, I should have used this link.

Another idea that seized me by the brain today was that the main political parties already have large bases of amateur people who could be pounding the pavements of Christchurch finding out what everyone needs, and giving them whatever information they know, if those people are cut off. They don't need to say what party they're with unless they want to, but just going to houses, talking to people, and finding out what they need most urgently strikes me as incredibly valuable work, and something they have an incentive to do anyway.
Is this already happening? Does anyone know?

Re the cathedral bells, the fallen bells at the Marienkirche in Lubeck, left as a memorial when rebuilt after air-raid destruction, are what I remember most clearly 30 years later.

Having said all that, am I the only one who is uncomfortable with talk of re-building? It feels like it is too soon to have that conversation.
I don't think it's too soon to start the big picture conversation, and let those who want to join in, and let imaginings start fermenting. It's such a huge question, I want to start thinking about it before the developers.
Totally agree about the awfulness of Christchurch malls

I'm enjoying Kennedy Graham's despatches from his "beloved city". He did the same journaling during the trainwreck of the Copenhagen Conference, and admitted it was partly to keep himself sane.

They were great! So calm. Perhaps that strange webpage I read about but didn't bother clicking on was referring to the wrong Bob : ).

I was going to comment on some of the ironies in the story, but realised I would be spoiling you. Enjoy!

Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to
I rung my dear friend who lives in Rockinghorse Road last night. After fretting for a couple of days at not knowing how they were doing with probably no power or water, and likely house damage so close to the epicentre, I finally remembered they had a corded phone. They and their house were unscathed, but after being so upbeat and blitzish last time she said, "it's awful, just awful". So I understand about the disappearence of optimism and resilience. I hope it creeps back over time.

Best speech I've heard her give. I hope her Mum and sister were listening.

Thank you so much for letting us know her, Emma. You inherited more from your mother than her great legs.
