  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

(And yes, I accept that you can assume voter's "active will" is still delivered in such a scenario if you assume they have voted taking in to account the full vagaries of the MMP system and how it plays out for that party/candidates)

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

Gareth - this had been discussed on National Radio on Sunday.
Possibly some referendum in the future maybe.
    It does seem 'quaint'.

Even if you get less party votes, you only need one member to win an electorate to get one in parliament...

Specifically the "Cabinet seat if you got in through a colleague winning an electorate" bit?
Because even putting aside the threshold/electorate arguments for a minute, if you do get in that way aren't you the LEAST mandated MP? And therefore not really in a position to demand Cabinet responsibility?

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

But the peoples... they wants him!

The primary reason I think Douglas shouldn't be in cabinet (well, primary after his history... and zombie allegiance...) is that he's only there because SOMEONE ELSE won an electorate seat.

IMHO (and I'm sure Graeme, I/S etc have much better constitutional counter-arguments), if you're party DIDN'T make the threshold and you got in based on a colleague's electorate win, I think your mandate for Cabinet responsibility is incredibly weak. Haven't seen anyone bring up this point just yet though.

  • Island Life: Let's be Frank,

Quotes went funny with the link sorry

meh, they'll be used to it. Meanwhile

    http://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2008/11/fisking_slack.html

Ahhhhhh, what? His comment that "ACT is in Govt and it's therefore totally different) is rather odd, given the coverage from the media so far is along the lines of Key running a minority Govt, EXACTLY like Labour was, e.g.
In a surprise move, Mr Key signalled his preference for an arrangement allowing his minor party allies to hold ministerial positions while remaining outside government - mirroring the unconventional deal done by Helen Clark and Winston Peters in 2005, which National roundly criticised

The shifts from attackers of the Govt to defenders of the Govt (and vice versa for others) is extraordinary to watch being played out...

  • Island Life: What I saw at the product launch,

oul is just a bar/cafe in Ponsonby conveniently located halfway along. Makes really good coffee, if I remember right, is quite large, and therefore a good venue for a large celebration.

I know the bar you mean, but that's not Soul... Can't remember what it's called though.
Soul is in the Viaduct, and whilst it is sometimes known as Property Developer HQ I'm not yet going to completely tar and feather my new MP for her choice of venue.

John Key having Johnny English as his favourite movie on Facebook - now THAT I'm up in arms about... :>

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

Angus, so presumedly you agree that a globally-set cost of carbon, with all major players involved, would remove the issue you talk about?
Australia, the EU, the UK and us are all looking to use mutually tradeable CER's - so it will at least be removed from those markets.

At the point that Latin America, Asia or Africa seriously confront our agricultural efficiency such that a carbon charge tips the balance, then I'd expect them to be in there as well. That is far enough away that I imagine they will be - any country that refuses to sign by then will likely be hit with trade tarriffs that will more than make up the difference

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

Angus, please lay out which of our large agriculture production competitors will have a significant difference in ETS-incentives? As I understand it, both the EU and the UK have ETS schemes in place that are currently working on getting agriculture included.

I'd also like your view on whether or not we should be reducing emmissions overall in our economy? Particularly given we have signed up to Kyoto like every other developed nation. Do you simply think taxpayers should wear the cost? Or is a whole-of-market ETS not the way to do it?

Thanks Graeme. Where's the upside in the arrangement then?
