Paul, CUs will be equal to marriage when we have the choice of them. While we're barred from marriage they remain unequal. I get your point about legal rights being conferred by either, but that's only part of the picture.
@Mrs Skin, sure I get that point - I was just trying to clarify the nature of the inequality. I don't mean to diminish your or others' points, but do think it worth noting that both confer the same status/rights. I think of them as equivalent if not equal.

I've had this argument with crusty old journalists before: you'll find it very hard to convince one that a story has to be in the public interest to be written.
I understand that. There's a space between defamation law and the role of the Press Council that I'd always thought editors ought to fill (lest parliament do it). I can't help but think in this instance, the Herald's editor has failed (again).
Future regulation of media anyone?
Well, had the media STFU earlier, you would never have asked the question.
Seems a bit of an angry way to make a point in response to a fair question but yeah, I kinda agree.

HOW EQUAL IS THAT?
How unequal is it? Are the rights confered by CU's different from those associated with marriage? I got married, my wife wanted not a single mention of God though we did have a female priest do the officiating. If we'd been able, we may well have got CU'd (with or without said preist). I understood, possibly incorrectly, that CU's were equivalent to marriage; are they not?
Perhaps the point you're making is not that the quantum of rights is different but that there's no reason to deny same-sex couples what straight couples have? I get that.

I'm assuming you agree that she was *right* to decline to answer the questions put to her. After all it was Rankin who agreed to go on the programme and it is good to see her stand her ground.
I think she was, actually. I don't think the public has a right to know too much about the circumstances leading to the suicide of a woman who was married to a man who's recently married someone else who has recently been appointed to the Board of a public body.

I actually felt sorry for her until she started blaming it all on a left-wing conspriracy.
The HoS is left-wing? But, yeah, I tend to agree.
Key and Bennett may keep their nominee but you have to wonder why they wanted her in the first place? If all you need is "colourful" character, then who's next? Merepeka Raukawa-Tait?

(In a different vein, I really respect the fact that Grant Robertson is out and gay in a way that does not preclude him being obsessively knowledgeable about the history of Otago rugby.)
I'm sure Grant now supports Wellington-based teams... though I note he's a vociferous supporter of the Phoenix but less so the 'Canes...

"Her voice, however, could strip paint. There's the beef."
Agreed. I can appreciate all things Dora apart from the extremely irritating voice they've given her. The stage show personas voice wasn't nearly as bad.
Fair enough. Dora's superior to most alternatives, however I thought the stage show surprisingly sparse - particuarly when compared with the Wiggles extravaganza!

You don't want to get me started on Dora the Explorer. Or Thomas the Tank Engine. Actually, the pillow/shield is a work of art.
Thomas is a stupidly compliant sycophant, Dora a tough Hillary-like explorer. Her oversight is acceptable.
You've got a beef?
Don't touch my shit -- and if you're going to drink my milk, replace it. xxxoxxx GOD
Nice work.

Christ.
It's ok Giovanni, Dora the Explorer pjs work too.

I'm actually feeling sorry for Paula Bennett. Tracey Watkins today on Bennett:
As some of her more senior colleagues rush to distance themselves from the appointment, she is copping some of the blame for apparently failing to brief them that there were issues in Ms Rankin's life that were likely to blow up if she joined the Families Commission. She failed the basic political test of keeping friends close and enemies closer, meanwhile; despite an early heads-up that UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne was against Ms Rankin, she failed to keep him in the loop, which only stoked the row. He wasted no time wading into the appointment as divisive and controversial.
Umm, why Russell? Bennett's a new and junior Minister. She should either take modest and sensible decisions or thoroughly and complete research and plan ahead of making bold ones. I've no sympathy for her, particularly since she's been absent in the last few days. That Key's stepped in and not her tells me she's not up to this - or possibly that Rankin was forced on her?
