Firstly, if your job is to take all the set play kickoffs and get them coming in to the strikers at head height, that's a pretty important job given that this is a primary way that NZ is going to be able to score.
It was messy play alright. The shots almost never went where the midfielders sent them, only in the general vicinity, and the strikers almost always tried to shoot from too far out - taking shots that were difficult for those a class above them. When they came right in they showed some danger.
In a way however the messy style of play suited this game. The Slovaks gave plenty of space, and there was almost always an unmarked man in midfield, who could give a long high pass into the middle. And full credit to a sustained defence. Even though NZ's ball control was lacking, they did close down space near the box effectively.
Paston was... I didn't know whether to laugh or cry whenever he touched the ball.

To me I confess the early stage is always the most exciting part. Everyone's in it, you get to discover new players and often to watch the best football.
South Korea played the most interesting football I've seen in this tournament so far. Precise, lightfooted, and assured.

Actually, headgear has been found to make American Football more dangerous, as people's expectation of risk involved in a collision with a head changes dramatically. The actual risk is only lowered a little.
And thus you see men using their heads as weapons in ways that would seem idiotic were they not wearing helmets.

I mean, if he can't be honest about his own height and age and is so evasive about it when caught out,
Height I can forgive adding an inch. It's one of those things which is particularly sensitive, and people do tend to discriminate based on height.
Age? Well people are more likely to have access to your DOB than stop you with a tape measure...

And Orwell defined sport as 'war, minus the shooting'.
I have wondered what the nexus of sport and international relations is. This rather fascinating literature review seems to give an insight.

Has anyone else seen the McDonald's 'we support the World Cup' ad with the three guys on the couch?
Everything that is ridiculous about football, in the most expensive sports ad of all time.

Oh, and I have to say that I don't mind the K'naan Coca Cola anthem either. If music must be commodified in the most relentless of fashions, you might as well have a good time doing it.

St Pauli are the best team in Europe. Sure, they don't win matches, but neither do New Zealand. They have amazing spirit, and ethos.
(not in English, but you'll get the idea.)

i'm just asking why the output is so poor.
Because that's what his producers want. If they didn't like it they'd have someone else.

That was what I talk from all that "autocue reader" stuff, and various other comments in this thread.
Fair enough. It felt like it was aimed at me (although I have not claimed that any television worker works less hard than any other New Zealander).
However, I want to feel like I'm disagreeing respectfully. I'll tone down a little.

Double post.
