I'm starting to think allowing anyone to own pistols & military style weapons is an assult on my freedom.
I'll wait with interest to see what comes out about Jans Collectors license and what actions were taken once that lapsed.

Top cop just said on RNZ that Jan had a lifetime licence and collectors licence too, but they expired in 2002 as the change of systems came into being.
He presumably got all his nutty toys legally and kept them through a failure to police the changes. So far beyond intelligence this was a serious error of administration, something that a registar would fix.

If stolen military weapons are used in crime, the answer has to be follow Aussies lead and destroy all military weapons (& pistols too) not used by the NZDF & Police. As happened after Port Arthur.

I seem to remeber at about 5 or 6pm on Friday night Radio NZs reporter going to town with a blow by blow report of tank movements but I can't find it on line.

Matthew, gotta agree on the use of the LAV and thanks for pointing out the section concerned.
However on the issue of gun registration we'll have to agree to disagree.
I do want to see greater control of firearms and ammunition.The second point I didn't quite get to was training and competency in firearms. There is no test, like driving a car. Hence the regular deaths at the start of Duck hunting season.
I'm a little lost too as to how being in the reserves for six years, 21 years ago has any bearing on these events. The Army doesn't just give rifles away or train you how to electrify your doorhandles.
There is a lot wrong with Jan but I'm not sure it has much to do with being a cut-lunch commando 21yrs ago. -
To look at guns is probably the best action we could take.
Day one of the Duck Hunting season and it was one man dead, one boy injured and dozens of protected wildlife killed.
Two things need to be done. All weapons and ammunition need to be registard. From here we can tell which were 'stolen' and which were sold ilegally. It won't stop crime but allow for the tracing of weapons and holding those who enable crime to be punished.
Had a look at Kiwibolg on Friday and a number of comments mentioned the amount of hunter who are not licenced that they run into in DoC huts and that they are realy check up on regarding their firearms/license.

This action by the police and use of military kit was totally justified.
Like the bomb robot, so too the LAV was a useful tool, used correctly.Had they opened fire with the 50cal or tried to knock the house down with the LAV. That wouldn't have been acceptable.
Tragic as this last weekend was. I do hope we keep our unarmed police force.

I am lost for words and understanding of Michal Laws and as such not sure if I should ignore him or rally against him.
Michael Laws is to particapatory democracy what Adolf Hitler was to representative democracy.
They both use fundamentaly good systems for the worst possible outcomes. This isn't because I disagree with the results (but I do), it is the fear and division both require to achieve their results & that inturn destroys the greater sense of community and belonging by scape goating a minority. -
