  • Hard News: Sunday's Perfect Storm,

It is an absolute outrage that Bailey Kurariki is having pizza and KFC delivered to his house!

He should be eating meals made from organic, locally sourced, in-season produce.

    ;)

  • Cracker: ALTered States,

Just last week I was in a conversation with a young woman who complained that New Zealand television news was rubbish because it was full of cutesy animal stories.

Now, I've watched a lot of television news over the past four years (for professional reasons, y'know), I totally agree with Damian - there's not actually a lot of cutesy animal stories out there.

And if there are, they tend to be slotted in the final slot of the bulletin, where things are winding down and other lighter news goes.

Maybe the cutesy animal stories stand out because they're the ones that people remember and talk about at work the next day without fear of rarking up the crazy political guy.

Aaaaaaand the other thing with TV news is that a good news reader can't be more important than the news they're reading. They have to be almost a neutral background - no more thrilling than newsprint or HTML. A topless lady adds a distraction. We're not paying full attention to the important news item. We're looking at her tits.

  • Hard News: TV list show in "doesn't…,

I found Karyn to be painful ...I don't know what she used to be like a presenter (a bit before my time), but I'd struggle to think of a more uncomfortable, un-energetic T.V host!

Something else to keep in mind - before Karyn Hay turned up on the telly, most TV presenters - even for youth-oriented TV - spoke in BBC perfect English accents, which they had to learn.

Karyn spoke in her natural New Zealand accent, and this upset some viewers because, well, it was different. So we have her to think for helping to break down the cultural cringe. Choice.

I felt like a proper senior citizen when Rock The Nation explained what the "ReadyTo Roll" television programme was. And then Petra Bagust called it "RTR Countdown", which was its late '80s incarnation, and that made me feel less a senior citizen and more middle-aged.

  • OnPoint: Media beat-off,

**Shep Cheyenne:** So Dawkins attributes meme to hmself, well who else would he attribute it to?

Rich of Observationz: I thought the word "meme" was invented by ultra-pretentious American dud-prediction comic Wired anddisliked it accordingly.

You know who can settle this? Yeah, it's the Oxford English Dictionary. OED reprazent. This is the earliest mention of meme that the OED has found:

**1976** R. DAWKINS Selfish Gene xi. 206 The new soup is the soup of human culture. We need a name for the new replicator, a noun which conveys the idea of a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation. ‘Mimeme’ comes from a suitable Greek root, but I want a monosyllable that sounds a bit like ‘gene’. I hope my classicist friends will forgive me if I abbreviate mimeme to meme... It should be pronounced to rhyme with ‘cream’. Examples of memes are tunes, ideas, catch-phrases, clothes fashions, ways of making pots or of building arches.

  • 08 Internet NZ: Where now?,

Interesting lead pitch, before running the blog-spam.

Yeah, insulting potential customers and not proof-reading your comment - that's so not the way to do it.

    It's not just on Macs

True! I'm getting the blank character squares on my Windows work computer, which doesn't support the rogue alphabet set.

  • Hard News: A night on the town with Mr Slack,

Thanks David, but I think credit goes to online editors of all these sites (stuff, NZH, Scoop) who frankly do an amazing job in an industry that is only *just* being recognised.

Yeah, that's what it's about - recognition. It's not a passing trend or some niche thing that only nerds pay attention to. It's popular and it's ordinary now and that's what's important.

  • Hard News: A night on the town with Mr Slack,

Next year, I'd like to see the nine blogs that make up PA be entered seperately and see what happens.

Or perhaps there should be an award for individual blogs (the work of one blogger) and group blogs (the work of several bloggers).

Also, I would like to extravagantly demand some NZ awards for bloggers.

am i the only one who can see chinese characters where the date and times should be at http://publicaddress.net/system/</quote>

This happens to me sometimes when I'm looking at PA System on my Mac. It seems that the AM and PM next to the times turn into some sort of Chinese/Japanese characters.
