  • Hard News: Media 7,

<quote>i do feel a little guilty about that (us chardonnay socialists are always feeling guilty about something). i could turn off adblock for public address i suppose...

just out of curiosity, what percentage of PA readers use firefox?<quote>

I use it, with the ads on. What's with this free riding business? We get to come here and play around on the best blog site in NZ, and you're too damned stingy to watch the ads in return for all the entertainment?

  • Hard News: Post Foo,

Thanks for that summary, Russell. Interesting to see what works and what doesn't in that relationship between PR and journalism, and from the point of view of an outsider, to read an article and think about what input the company / PR people / whoever had. It's handy to have some tools to hand to deconstruct and get to what's really going on behind a newspaper or magazine story.

    Okay, pomo moment over.

  • Hard News: Post Foo,

And I'd love to tell you about how [REDACTED] is only a couple of weeks away from a big (and possibly controversial) deal with [REDACTED]. But I can't …

What a tease! Looking forward to it...

but in the meantime, can you, or someone else who was there, give us some of the highlights of this, if that doesn't break any Foo house rules.

The surprise hit for me was the session run by Erica Lloyd and Juha Saarinen about pitching stories and relating to journalists, where I chipped in quite a bit from the floor. The three of us were worried that we were dispensing the bleeding obvious, but we got feedback about it for the rest of the event.

  • Southerly: Overheard on a Bus,

a friend who went to a decile 10 school (not Auckland) had never heard of "three" being pronounced "free"...

Odd... seeing that "th" is one of the very last sounds that children get under control. Have they never listened to a class of 5 year olds counting: "One, two, free, four..."

  • Southerly: Overheard on a Bus,

Back in the day when I was doing speech lessons (you know, reciting poetry and all that), my teacher taught me the vowel scale.

Say just the vowel sounds in these words.

Do Put Whole Thought On Art Thus Turn Sad Men Gay With Zeal.

I think the "ea" in "near" is the sound in Zeal, but I'm not quite sure where the sound in square falls. Somewhere between Men and Gay? A semitone, perhaps.

  • Southerly: Overheard on a Bus,

One of the nice things about all the homophones is that it gives you a fabulous opportunity to be a pedant in speech as well as in prose.

she can't even hear the difference

You mean she can't hare it. Or here or hair it. Or even, god forbid, heir it.

  • Island Life: In another league,

Broadly, there are two ways to defend yourself against a rape charge. One is to say that it never took place and the other is to say that yes, we had sex, but she (or sometimes he) consented.

So if you are going to claim consent, then you should be able to say on what grounds you believed consent was given, and those grounds ought to be able to stand up to a reasonable person test.

  • Island Life: In another league,

A law change - sounds good to me. What about if a person is drunk, then the onus is on the other person to show he or she had reasonable grounds to believe the first person had consented.
