  • Island Life: Bye, bye, you peculiar guy.,

    Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Recommended.

Double recommended. Also Rockwiz - Australian variation shot at the Espy in St Kilda, Melbourne with the gloriously talented Julia Zemiro. Great version of the Church's Under the Milky Way avail on website. Spicks and Specks too (starring expat Hawera boy, Alan Brough)

  • Field Theory: Just one point in it,

And don't compare him with Thorn, who is playing better now than ever before.

I agree. I vividly recall standing quite close to the sidelines on the eve of NZ's game against Italy during the 2003 RWC (the game that Umaga injured his knee) and seeing Thorn beneath the posts (at the Melbourne dome or whatever it's called). He is/was a hugely impressive athlete and I think he proved his worth over the last season or two. He's now a first pick player I believe. I also think, save for his poor handling in a couple of situations, that Rokocoko's playing well too though I think Masaga could eclipse him...

  • Field Theory: Just one point in it,

441 comments now. Disappointingly, most of them aren't "don't have you something important to do rather than write this article?"

Maybe Hinton's a more astute judge of what's important than I realised. Maybe he's unleashed some supressed frustration about our collective timidity that the public can deflect onto the mute ABs? But then again, who-the-fuck-cares?

Incidentally, is Lauaki injured or just not selected?

Goodness, anyone else thing that Marc Hinton's struggling with the pressures of writing for a Daily? This piece is just silly; silly topic, ridiculous hyperbole and stupid connection with the elleged assualt of Bastareaud.

Great to see Masaga get a start against Italy. I'd've like Weepu to start too...

  • Hard News: Chaos in Kingsland,

There is considerable irony in the fact that Mark Thomas was Lee's campaign manager. History never repeats, but it sure as hell echos.

Was he? Really. I didn't know that. Hell!

  • Hard News: Chaos in Kingsland,

Like I said at the beginning, I thought and still do think she was a familiar talking head for the Asian community, and Mt Albert has an ever increasing Asian community. At the end though we have David saying listen to the people, it's about community. That's what people want to hear. Not Ahh ahh, oh, ahh, my party is wonderful, It's not about you.Key dropped her like a hot potato, not nice.

    All fair comment.

I guess what I mean is that Lee's new, young and inexperienced and a tough byelection complicated by major issues like transport are a difficult test. I don't think she's terribly substantial but I do think she's an improvement on the likes of Neeson, Simich or even Christine Fletcher. Perhaps we've seen both the best and worst of her. I can't help but recall what Mark Thomas went through in 1996 ~ he was a far more experienced but still new candidate, a far smarter operator who still got totally stuffed by the conveniences of the day. If you could swap them but, Thomas has a lot more to offer than Lee.

But still, I'm wrapped for Mt Albert that they've elected Shearer. Clark was always going to be impossible to replace, but in Shearer they've clearly got an impressive representative.

  • Hard News: Chaos in Kingsland,

As tough as politics can get, I must admit I felt a tinge of sorrow (just a tinge) for M.Lee on prime news to night. Sad that she seemed to accept her defeat all by herself. Key was having a holiday in Taupo and I guess he felt it wasn't important enough to be around for the Nats yesterday or all of last week for that matter.

Likewise. She didn't run a good campaign but I suspect she's a better MP than this byelection revealed. I have some sympathy for her too, though like you I'm very happy with the outcome, and am surprised by the lack of support from her Leader.

  • Hard News: Swine flu, terror and Susan Boyle,

BTW -22 degrees Celsius and a clear blue day.

Hell, I envy that weather too! It was fourteen in Sydney today; I'm sure it's been colder, but I can't recall when (recently). Nice place Noosa. I recall it has the most popular state/federal reserve is that correct?

Apropos nothing in particular, I've finally found some time to quickly review NZ news and blogs, it's all got rather unpleasant hasn't it? (there's probably a thread for this rhetorical question).

  • Southerly: Special Guest Michael Laws on…,

    A work of genuis indeed.

Can I point out once again that Micael Lhaws* holds an MA in creative writing from Victoria and that at the time when I came across him he had just published the very worthy book of poetry of a dear friend?

Really, if he's got ability why's he hide it so? I've always thought him the ultimate cypher. That'd explain why he could produce something meaningful but ultimately revert to type.

*I've settled for this spelling because previously he was getting a free "h" in his surname at the taxpayers expense, and that just didn't seem right.

I love this mockery. Mockery is what Lhaws deserves. I hate it when the likes of him (and Slater etc) get taken even slightly seriously.
