Field Theory: Hospital Pass, in reply to
It was suggested in some quarters that cruise ships be hired for temporary accommodation in Christchurch if the games were to go ahead there. Dunedin could quite easily do the same thing. Additionally, a special passenger train service could be laid on between Christchurch and Dunedin for day trippers. I don't know whether the Dunedin stadium (which I'm told students have started calling the Toast Rack due to the roof struts) has its own rail platform planned, but it is right next to the track and not far from the station.

Hard News: The digital switch-off, in reply to
I did notice when I saw the tv listings the other day that the revamped channel 4 is now carrying Sesame Street - which hasn't been on NZ screens for more than a decade. It'd be much better to have NZ content, but by all accounts it's still a quality show.

Charlie Brooker has a lot to say about this sort of thing:
In fact, you may want to look at his new series How tv ruined your life for more on television’s state of affiars today.

This looks really good. I've watched quite a bit of material on NZ On Screen in recent months, it'd be cool to see more archival material.

Awesome thing of the year: The BBC's History of the World in 100 Objects
Rotten thing of the year: the death of Paul Reynolds. -
I try and keep control of my name online, which means I've signed up to Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and have a user profile filled out on Wikipedia. I'm still somewhat annoyed that a company dealing in egg incubation equipment is still the top result on a Google search when you search for my name, but at least they've changed their motto from "Peter Sime: Total birth control" to something a little more flattering

Hard News: Where nature may win, in reply to
When in session, Parliament sits Tuesday-Thursday, given that this thing started on Friday there hasn't been a chance to discuss it there.

I think if anyone seeks to make political capital out of this right now, it will seriously backfire on them. I think around the inquest (I too have lost hope) we might see some posturing.
That aside, what a bad year for the South Island. I'm a Dunedin lad born and bred and my heart goes out to my fellow mainlanders.

In other news, the Defence White Paper has been released and there. I'm a little worried about this report in the Herald[ (http://dft.ba/-3yD) - "To "civilianise a significant number of posts currently filled by uniformed personnel not required to deploy operationally", enabling it to shift uniformed personnel to the front of the organisation."
For one thing this sounds like we're going to open ourselves up to contractors for another, the military can't engage in industrial action (that would be mutiny), but these vital "civilianised" positions could - generally when negotiating a collective agreement, but also over issues of safety. Servicemen could die if civilian medical personnel refused to go into a combat zone - as they'd have a right to do, for example.

Glad to see Jon Stewart receive the Autotune the News treatment. Check out this Wikileaks rap featuring Julian Assange
