  • Speaker: An Open Letter To David Cunliffe, in reply to Danielle,

    Labour men are eunuchs.

I suppose someone who uses “PC” unironically is not going to realise how offensive that is, but, um, it’s really offensive.

Once you get over the initial 'is this jerk really this freaking stupid', yeah, it is.

Also keeping in mind that this is a guy who proudly stated, on the record, as being the person whose role in politics is “smashing your face into the ground”.

    Yeah, spotted that.

As long as he remains an outlet for his political links, he’s going to retain the attention he has.

I suspect his kind of connections will ensure that it’ll be business as usual until the slime seriously blows back onto someone really important in the National camp.

  • Speaker: An Open Letter To David Cunliffe, in reply to Dismal Soyanz,

I’ve been thinking along the same lines, with the proviso that it’s a big ask for Robertson’s partner to have Slater et al sniffing around.

Would they really be that stupid, especially in the light of Dirty Politics?

Slater et al have no 'moral' position on anything. They'll smear someone for being homophobic if they sense it will aid their agenda. Whoever the next opposition leader turns out to be, their partner will be scrutinised for vulnerabilities by these ratbags.

But you’re kinda saying that if you call people and and ask them a list of questions that’s data, but if you front up on their doorsteps and listen to them, that’s anecdote.

Yeah I am, kinda :) I’m not dismissing people’s experience, just very wary of jumping in any old direction because – well – gotta jump!

The last time that Tim Barnett ran for Chch Central he blogged about how he'd been both surprised and dismayed by the number of sad and broken single men he'd met when doorknocking in his electorate. I was impressed by his apparent candour in describing a problem that existed under a Government that he was part of. Then again, I wondered how such an outgoing and apparently approachable MP could have remained unaware of something that was happening in an electorate he'd represented for years.

Respect to those who put in the hard footslog, but it seems there'll always be hidden depths beyond the reach of doorknocking and datamining.

Ilam did pretty well in what was a tough year for us. And this isn’t arrogant either, it’s the kind of honesty and directness that Labour needs.

I'm only sorry that I missed out by a few blocks on being an Ilam voter. Unlike so many Labour insiders, James Dann has never been in the habit of talking down.

Gower is of course a synecdoche for the media pack.

True dat. Distinct from, but probably related to, Neil Gaiman’s American Gods female Media incarnate:

"Media. I think I have heard of her. Isn’t she the one who killed her children?”
“Different woman,” said Mr. Nancy. “Same deal."

Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln is well worth a look for a masterclass in that art.

Sounds like just the kind of bodice burster Paula Bennett will have been cramming in preparation for her elevation.

"The problem is that children in the most recent generation of adults born between 1982 and 1995, known as Generation Y, were raised to believe it is their right to have everything given to them more than any other previous generation.”

I can recall identical sentiments expressed about each rising generation. It's just the yapping of the working dogs of the status quo, heading them into the chute.
