Perhaps because I think I'm ugly,
Perhaps because I'd think it vain,
Perhaps because I think it shows me
    That I am,
    Completely insane.

  • Capture: One picture of you, and no more, in reply to Jackie Clark,

This is my best friend Carol, and I, and our dear friend Sue.

I noticed a little heart hovering over your heads,
I noticed the patterns of camera movement,
    I realised at once,
A distant reflection had morphed into a symbol of love.
    ;-)

    Is this good news?
In sudden announcement, US to give up control of DNS root zone

The new change is in advance of the upcoming ICANN meeting to be held in Brazil in April 2014. Brazil and other nations have fumed at revelations of American spying on its political leaders and corporations, which were first revealed in September 2013 as the result of documents distributed by whistleblower Edward Snowden. The South American country also threatened to build its “own cloud,” as a consequence of the NSA’s spying.

The " threatened to build its “own cloud,”" bit made me smile though... visions of "my own little black cloud"

  • Busytown: School bully,

Ms Parata, they wrote in an editorial, has “revealed the Cabinet’s firm conviction that freemarket ideology is as applicable to purchasing school education as it is to buying a BMW or a nice dinner at one of Tony Astle ONZM’s restaurants.”

There, fixed it for you Ms Parata.

I too spluttered into my coffee when I read about Hekia Parata’s plans to link school funding to student “progress.”. The stupidity of such a statement would have shocked me had I not known where it came from.
    Now I shall draw a long bow…
It is obvious to me that if you want to sell something you have to have some objective measure of its worth, like its ranking with other offerings of its kind, otherwise how would you know how much to flog it for? Plus, a business is surely worth more if its workers have no power?.

    Oh excellent post BTW

    Neal Stephenson’s Snowcrash

    Publication date June 1992
That man could see into the future with a clarity matched only by the NSA's spying network...

The story begins in Los Angeles in the unspecified future, no longer part of the United States. The federal government of the United States has ceded most of its power to private organizations and entrepreneurs. Franchising, individual sovereignty, and private vehicles reign (along with drug trafficking, violent crime, and traffic congestion). Mercenary armies compete for national defense contracts while private security guards preserve the peace in sovereign, gated housing developments. Highway companies compete to attract drivers to their roads and all mail delivery is by hired courier. The remnants of government maintain authority only in isolated compounds where they transact tedious make-work that is, by and large, irrelevant to the dynamic society around them.

    Uncanny.

  • Hard News: Things worth knowing,

That $23 milk is very popular though

The popularity is such that the company is even considering getting its own plane.

One hopes that they will get that plane by totally above board means...

    In other big Business news...
Fletchers, having seemingly given up sticking feathers onto arrow shafts are all set to Bring in the Big Boys to scoop up the gravy in Christchurch and any other profitable PPPs they can get their sticky little mitts on.

New Zealand's largest construction company will bring some of the world's biggest builders here for the $4 billion-plus new public private partnership contracts it wants to win.

"What about the Workers" I hear you cry, well no doubt there will be plenty of toilets for us Kiwis to clean and as the minimum wage has been raised by 25c you can now go out and buy that house.

What a shame he died in a car crash -brake failure.

The grossest expression of this view came in a letter I received from a Hamilton reader who told me that I was known in the United States as a "nigger lover", and that I had betrayed my own culture and people.

    Hamiltonian brake failure?
