  • Hard News: Walk the Line,

C'mon guys, do the test! Or is nobody else sober? ;-)

  • Hard News: Walk the Line,

The tests do sound rather like they could lend to abuse. I suggest we have a contest to see who can stand on one leg with their head tilted back stone cold sober for the longest.

Currently I can do about 4-5 seconds. Also try walking along a straight line on a windy day. Since walking along a line is actually an unusual activity I can't think most many people can actually do it well. I'm out by 7 seconds on the time distortion too, although I'm sure with practice the best method will be just to count heartbeats.

My wife's result was 3 seconds for the balancing test (after 5 trials), and out by 12 secs on the time distortion. Interested to hear other people's results.

  • Hard News: Down in the Park?,

I'm with Craig. It's a very similar issue to the Springbok tour, which, incidentally, I have not changed my view on for 25 years. At age 10 I knew it was wrong to support apartheid, and at age 35, I still know it's wrong to support race based dictatorships. That the racists happen to be brown themselves changes nothing.

Don, you don't have to say if you're going to continue using it anyway :-)

Hamish, I'm really thinking of things like the landmark closure of Napster, which shut down mp3 downloading for all of about a week. Technology moves so much faster than the law. Every time they make an anti-circumvention law, an anti-circumvention-law-circumvention is invented and just makes a new set of nerds rich. People who want ripz will get them, people who don't will pay. Computer nerds and lawyers get rich and nothing changes.

Actually, his rebuttal is even less substantive than Brash's, which gives at least a few examples of what he considers to be inaccuracies.

What Basset says is pretty much what he accuses Hager of - a conspiracy theory. A vast media conspiracy to believe Hager's hundreds of pages of documentation over his and Brash's, um, assertions and good character?

    So much for yesterday's news.

Re: copyright laws. Call me a crooked kook, but how many people really give a crap what the law is on ripped tunes? I can see that it can affect the way big companies deliver new music formats via new revenue channels, but when it comes to ripping off music, is anything going to change? Kids will still borrow a CD from a mate and rip it, download rips off P2P, directly swap hundreds of GB of files, and listen to them on MP3 players. All seems a bit like antispam laws - good talking point, utterly ineffective.

  • Hard News: Doing the Rounds,

I don't think Hide would accept the kind of National Key is hinting at. Anything that can collapse such a disgusting bunch of socialists would be all right by him. Also, the collapse of the hard right within National is the renaissance of ACT. Perhaps he does get MMP after all.

Kyle, you don't get Rod's game. He knows the Nats want this to go away. Only people like him stand to gain from further publicity of the inner workings of National at the moment.

    Kent

"...he may well win the day by means which none of you have so far taken into consideration. By not staking out ideological or territory he is coating himself in teflon and making himself less vulnerable to attack."

It's not a new angle, it's the same angle Brash tried. Also John Kerry. He could end up another 'also ran'. People know when they think they know what you stand for. They also know when they have no idea. That's where we are now, and it'll only be a honeymoon for so long. If the Brash script is going to continue to be played, expect a decisive move of some kind very soon, probably just after Christmas.

  • Hard News: Doing the Rounds,

Craig "Gotcha soundbite interviews" are never dull. Misrepresentative, maybe. But "I supported the Tour", is hardly misrepresentative if it is said, even if it's followed up with ", but only because I loved rugby, and have since changed my mind". It's still the truth, and it tells us something. And yes, Key's bum does look big in that, no matter how clever his tailor.
