His research was done last year before the funded family care came in.

Pride. Stand out. In its 3rd month at Wellington's Penthouse. True story and heart-warming for old lefties. Bonus of lovely Welsh scenery, accents and singing.

My favourite writing this year is Robert Martin's biography written by John McRae called Becoming a Person. Not for any great literary merit but because it is one of NZ's hidden stories of citizenship denied, and then made good. Robert grew up in various institutions but is now a nominee for a UN committee. The book sits nicely next to Dirty Politics, its Craig Potton stablemate.

Thanks for the Access opportunity, Russell and Sacha. Good to have something pan-disability as a sort of successor to the humans autism blog (which I hope is archived somewhere for some fine early disability writing from Giovanni and others now old hands). Some of my posts on Access are ideas revisited from my PhD thesis on autism - not the conventional way to publish, but suits me better and I like the way the discussions meander.

Emerge has just emailed with a very positive response. Going to see them in January. A helpful attitude goes a long way.

The job initially came with Emerge's help - they still keep in touch. It was set up by parents in the early 80s and has retained good community principles.

Access: Some aspects of New Zealand's…, in reply to
The original concept of Mainstream was great as it was developed in the 1980s when there was no assumption that disabled people even deserved an education or a paid job beyond a sheltered workshop. Not how it actually works now – or doesn’t. In 2014 employers shouldn’t need a bribe.
Ironically, Oscar’s employer has just told me this morning that the job is not working for him or them, which is not entirely surprising after 10 years. He is now in a transition process out. But as all parents of disabled children (whatever their age) know, finding something else will be largely up to someone else, probably me.
