  • Indiana Jonesing,

Got to go get the kids from school... then do the after-school runaround, but I will come up with an answer for that, Russell.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

    the Clinton diehards

They're certainly dieing hard. Even though I don't want it to be the case, I think it really is game over for Senator Clinton now. On the other hand, I see no reason why she shouldn't fight to the wire. Isn't that what a male candidate would do? And be lauded for it?

I would however, prefer that she didn't fight dirty.

  • Island Life: A simple 'your lordship'…,

The Wiki (of course) on the use of the title "Dr".

Whose protocol? "Doctor" was established as a title given to people of higher learning long before it was ever applied to physicians.

And you never know when someone might be having an existential crisis in the middle of a trans-Pacific flight! :-)

  • Indiana Jonesing,

one of the most hated, polarising figures in American politics

You mean like so hated that a massive 43% of Democrats still prefer her.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

__ it would have been great to see the mad patriarchs in places like Afghanistan forced to deal with that most perfidious of creatures, a woman.__

You mean like how they've been dealing with Condaleeza Rice?

Good point. Though possibly there's a qualitative difference between dealing with someone who still has to report to the boss back home, and dealing with someone who is the boss.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

Well.... he could hand a large policy area over to her, like healthcare.

My dream team would be the other way around (for reasons), but that's highly unlikely now. But one of my reasons for preferring Clinton (by a margin) was that it would have been great to see the mad patriarchs in places like Afghanistan forced to deal with that most perfidious of creatures, a woman.

but it strikes me as a rather pretentious affectation using an academic title outside an academic context

I agree, mostly. There can be non-academic contexts where it might be important, as a means of establishing expertise (expert witness in court, maybe?).

I find it terribly useful when people ask me whether I'm 'Miss' or 'Mrs', and don't even offer me 'Ms'. "Dr," I say. Now, figure out whether I'm a person in my own right or if my status is dependent on whether or not I'm married.

I prefer to use my given name in any case, rather than a title.

  • Island Life: Supertooth,

Yeah.... I tried to think of an NZ equivalent to Sam Newman, and I couldn't. Not even Marc Ellis comes close. Larrikan and juvenile yes, but never so crassly misogynist. And I think if he did go that far, viewers would just turn it off.

It's one of the big differences I notice between t'old country and the new.
