On the way to the Coast, we spent a night in Wellington, at City Life (nice room, remind me to ask not to be near the breakfast kitchen on Level 5 next time) – and were confronted by the ongoing scandal that is New Zealand hotel internet service.
The best I've paid is $5 for 24hrs unlimited wireless internet - yeah, it wasn't the fastest in the world, but, hey, unlimited. At the very nice Hanmer Inn Motel in Hamner Springs, go figure. The hotel I stayed at in Wellington had *no* internet in many rooms - WTF - and was 10c/MB over ethernet for those that did.
So when booking places for the upcoming move to the US, I determined to make damn sure that everywhere I booked had free wifi. It turned out to be incredibly easy, because pretty much everywhere I looked at did - including the fairly rural motel. One can only hope that state of affairs will emerge here.

Seems to me that many are simply pissed off at Wikileaks for opening up information to the peasants. How can they be part of the chattering classes if they don't have a monopoly on information?
But does publishing people's tax records - for no obvious reason - really constitute "opening up information" as opposed to "being dicks"? Does having every piece of information in the world available to everyone necessarily makes it a better place? I tend to think not.
Moreover, if you're going to advocate full openness, then it's generally a good idea to practice it. That's not what seems to be happening.

You must watch Knowing then. Fast forward to the last 2 minutes, the scenes of total world destruction are visually appealing. The story is ridiculous, don't bother with it.
I actually sat through all of 2012. It was shite, but at least stuff blowing up was pretty. Should have fastforwarded through everything that wasn't stuff blowing up, though.

Apparently TINML rated very well. Although interesting to note they lost around a quarter of the audience in the second half...
I watched Survivors instead, on the grounds that I stand a shot of getting it in the US whereas I'd have to illegally aquire TINML to keep up with it and that would be Wrong.
(No, actually, it's because I cannot resist a good apocalypse, even if it's bizarrely tidy.)

Indeed -- but if you're reading this Lucy your tits should be given Schedule 4 protection.
For about thirty seconds there that was really fucking confusing.
They had names? I really should have listened to the dialogue. Or should I?
Probably not.

What I find wearing is the people saying, "What was he expecting, going to work at a Christian school?" ie he was asking for it, really.
I dunno, the letter this morning complaining that we put up with the public schools and their evolution and abortion for ten year olds was a touch more than wearing. Also the ones complaining that the problem wasn't that he was gay, it was that he wasn't Christian enough. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

In NZ I'm told the SIS aims to get vetting for TS completed within six months, but it can take longer, especially if a person has lived oversees or has other aspects of their life that require deeper investigation. Apparently in the US 18-24 months is more normal.
It's pretty understandable, considering the amount of information they probably have to go through. It's just a *really long* lead-up time to a job.

I couldn't help but to find her "blood rage" awfully arousing. The idea that she couldn't shag guys because she might have that happen seemed extremely pervy, in a good way.
That was Kahlan (the one who can't act). Cara's the sarcastic, ex-evil blonde (the type without which no genre show is really complete.)

Ok, ok, ok - so my wife an I were the only ones who like season 2 of Legend of the Seeker. At least they could have warned us they were giving up. I had to find out on Throng man! Who cares if the storyline was pointless? You had buff guys, bosom-y girls and a good chance to catch some NZ actors hanging out (look, it's Keisha!). A chance to see Craig Parker without watching Shortland Street. Awesome.
You weren't. Did you catch the episode where Craig Parker got to play Darken Rahl's comedic double? That was good.
(Not that the show was, generally, but as you say; plenty of eye candy and plenty of humour, sometimes intentionally. And Cara. I liked Cara.)

A navy radio operator told me once that it took two years before his security clearance came through. He reckoned those delays were a big part of the problem of getting and holding staff in the forces.
Someone I know who applied for a security-clearance-requiring job (I'm not sure what level, but it'd be pretty high) was told it would take at least six months to vet him if he was offered the job. For a graduate position, that's quite a wait, and a major disincentive if you need the income.
