The Oscars are a vaguely interesting example of marketing films to a very specific demographic ie the Academy voters (94% white, 77% male, median age of 62)

  • Hard News: Where are the foreigners?!,

I just hope the French win the final so we can see what gracious losers kiwi rugby fans actually are..... and then to see just how good john keys spin doctors are...

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit,

All I can say about all this is that every time Helen Kelly opens her mouth she puts her foot in it..... note for Helen, maybe it might be beneficial to actually learn about the industry you are trying to represent eg her quote in Stuff about "film companies depriving workers on basic rights including sick leave and holiday pay"

    HELLO Helen!
Many of us are freelance & are quite happy about it thanks!
Never had sick leave & never had holiday pay, 20 years in the film industry & quite happy thanks... If I wanted to be institutionalised and have all those 'benefits' I wouldn't be working in the film industry.

    Please give it a rest

  • Hard News: Celebrity Gibberish,

best solution? get rid of the fckng car! (or at least save it for out of town use) You live in a city of over a million people, surely there is a ubiquitous public transport system that makes owning a car redundant on more levels than just parking it? oh.... right....

  • Hard News: I'd just like to thank ...,

The only thing I don't get about Ladyhawk (other than her music) is why is she in the electronic category? Shes a rock singer/songwriter isn't she? Shame one category that could have been a little bit innovative was squandered....

  • Hard News: Undie Wankers,

The problem is that we live in an immature society, and it isn't just a problem with students. If you were to import one those coin operated vending machines from Japan that sells beer, whisky & sake & put it anywhere in New Zealand I sincerely doubt it would last a single night.

They can solve the problem of next years Undie 500 with the fun combination of water cannons, pepper spray & tazers but that doesn't solve the actual problem, it just removes a symptom....

  • Speaker: Why not a New Zealand Film Month?,

Seems to me a NZ Film month shouldn't be in any one format; it could be in cinemas, on multiple TV channels, online & out in the real world simultaneously.... And having a significant online presence means it transcends our own borders.... Why not put lots of those NZ short films we have all funded on vimeo & youtube for the month? (at least all the back catalog) And let the TV channels screen whatever NZ films they have rights for and/or want to gain rights for.... And the multiplexes could be supportive by at least dedicating one of their screens to NZ films for the month....

What does Anthony McCarten have to do with Harry Sinclair's film The Price of Milk?

FWIW The Price of Milk is available to rent from Aro St video in Wellington on DVD - its an american release so NTSC but is readily available.... (its one of my favorite NZ films too!)
