  • Hard News: Rain on his parade,

Russ: "And anyone who thinks Crow is just a bit of a wag has presumably forgotten his attempt to include the birth of baby in a porn film"

And when I published my distaste of this at the time on a web site, I had an abusive phone call. I put down the phone. It rang again. I discovered it was Steve Crow, this time using less abusive language to inform me that if I didn't take down my statement, he'd take me to court.

Hmm. As a family man of modest means, I didn't have the energy, money nor need to be in the public lime light, so I took my statement down.

Freedom of speech is easily quashed by those who are willing to abuse the legal process with their pocket money.

Once I took the statement down, I received another call from him. Would I consider working for him?

    Err... no.

The man has only one guiding principle: profit.

    Good on him.

  • Hard News: A few days away,

    RB: "hard-case cabin culture"

I still smile at the stock-joke of the Tranz Scenic staff, unchanged for decades....

"while on the observation deck, please keep cameras and all body parts inside the train. Although we're fully trained in first aid, there is only so much we can do with a sticking plaster".

    and

"The special for the day: Two cans of Speights for only $8 which is a 50 cent saving. Come to the dining car and drink yourself rich".

(the latter on the Tranzalpine - of course)

  • Hard News: A little understanding,

Your plight-slash-fight hit home recently, once removed, when one of my nephews was declared autistic. His father, sitting in the clinician's room thinking: "please, let it be bad parenting".

So, although we're insanely blessed with two boys who appear to be nothing but endowed with normality, I am thankful the universe isn't putting the learning curve other have had to endure onto my family.

And with that, congratulations to Mrs russb and your good self for making this journey together, and, somehow, finding time to celebrate your accomplishments - something we seem unable to do: a night off? Are you insane? ;-)

It blows me away that you have two "hard work" sons and still manage the output that you achieve...

... which really means Mr russb is covering your ass, ain't she?

Props to mrs B! Love and and credit all round!!! ;)

  • Hard News: A night on the town with Mr Slack,

Hmmm. Just read through the Netguide award winners.

    Comments.

PA: best signal to noise ratio.
Spot on. Corollary: Kiwiblog. Great posts, useless comments.

    Best blog runner up: Aardvark.
FFS. It's nothing but a right wing whinge day after day. Stopped reading that when it turned into a mid-life crisis about life on the dole in a crime infested rural back water with everyone else to blame for it.

    Best ISP.
Where did Orcon go? Did Kordia's purchase make that much of a difference? As a 10 year Orcon customer... not sure if that was a deserved demotion.

    Best Government site: IRD.
Well done. At the same time... WTF? What a sad indicator about life in NZ, right? I guess we DO have the most accountants per head of population, but still.

    In memoriam: Best Home Page.
This used to celebrate the best individual effort of some private plodder who put a great resource on the web out of love for "it", whatever it was. Great example of a previous winner: The Hidden Forest, a compendium of fungi, mosses, ferns et al as found in our forests. These days the best Home Page is Stuff?

    Sad.

Ok, that's me. Exit stage left. Or right. Don't want to offend anyone.

  • Hard News: A night on the town with Mr Slack,

I think I win the laid-back award for a Netguide award. I refused to attend the awards and they sent it to me by courier :) Mind you, that was in the early days when "Internet Awards" were a marketing ploy and I was as distrustful as the next recipient... :)

    Now then.

My memory may be faulty, especially as it is fuelled by a "few" McKenna's by now, but isn't there fibre running along side the main trunk railway lines?

Which begs the question: Did Labour buy that fibre as part of its purchase just recently?

And, if so, does this form the back-bone of its soon-to-be-announced plan?

Personally, I'd love to have anything over 50k/s between 6 and 11pm that currently masquerades as "broadband", but I'm not sure that would make me vote for a party that promises to deliver it all-else-being-equal.

Let's just all go to the beach, go for a bike ride, tramp, ski, dive, and remember why we really live here ;-)

  • Speaker: Apathy is where the heart is,

There have been quite a few opinion pieces recently about the decline in interest for rugby. I've even written some. But I'm not sure that the authors (including me) were quite right. From what I can tell rugby fans' attitudes are changing but their (our) enthusiasm is not dropping.

I am in that demographic. Too much of it, and then the obligatory period of mourning after the World Cup.

This year I'm not even playing the virtual game.

I'm sure I'll be back, but yes, the decline in rugby in myself, my friends and my family is real.

Too much of it. Too little time for it.

  • Busytown: A series of tubes,

"sent the two year old to the hospital, where I spent a couple of not completely horrible days watching him rehydrate on a drip, master the buttons on the electric bed, and discover the hitherto unknown delights of 24/7 cable TV"

    I hear ya.

Except they gave mine morphine. And I didn't get anything. Not even an ice block.

But giving mine morphine while I was near death-through-exhaustion meant I had to deal with a toddler bouncing off the walls for the next 6 hours! Sure, I had my own bed next to his in a private room, but do you think I could get my OWN?

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

  • Hard News: Things To Do,

"Depends what you are referencing. If it's the "Don't pollute GST with exceptions" meme then I'd say it's born more of bureaucratic pragmatism than some kind of latent right wing tendency."

    I think this is true.

    It is also very practical.

And there are also better ways to target relief to low disposable income households.
