@Ross, I agree that two weeks is too short to expect that the council could deal with all the broken services.
It wouldn't be too difficult for them to make a call in terms of habitability though. The combination of silt & sewerage appearing in people's properties, and their inability to easily wash themselves, their dishes, etc isn't exactly healthy. Liveable for a few days, perhaps, but not indefinitely. If the council would declare these houses temporarily unhabitable, then this would oblige people's insurance to cover alternative accommodation. If the council won't make this call, the insurance companies don't have to do anything.
Thankfully I'm married to a clever engineer, so at our place we are able to happily shower and wash, and simultaneously water the trees in the bush at the back of our garden!

So much focus on the cover, that I feel compelled to point out how hilarious the actual contents of the book are!Of course I might be accused of being biased, but early feedback from more objective parties definitively backs me up on this.

We're not quite there with Lucia yet. She'll find it difficult enough without her Mum for three days.

I was there, and can vouch for the surrealness of the whole event.
I think part of the reason that it shocked me was that it was 3 women in the car. I think if it had been men it would have felt less surprising to me. Which I guess must reveal something about my hidden biases regarding the innate dispositions of women vs men. Or something...

Just a note to say that we're all sick with genuine German germs here in Berlin (Yes - the Haywood household is in the Northern Hemisphere for now, hence the projections for an icy Christmas...)
I have sent an ailing David off to bed, so he asked me to post apologies for his absence - he won't be replying on this thread until he's awake and hopefully recuperated.

yup, you're absolutely right - as long as one considers Google part of the core vocabulary of English (which you obviously do! -note also your lower-case 'g' in googling which also suggests you don't really think of it as containing a proper name).
But I still think that it's just as legitimate to consider it a bit marginal, especially if you're not a frequent googler. Then Google is like Dougal (if we're talking pronunciation). Or if we're talking spelling, it's like Jackie - I would spell the verb 'Jackie-ing', even though this doesn't conform to any rules for core vocabulary. For more peripheral vocabulary, like names, people seem to find it most important to preserve the identity of the base word in the spelling/pronunciation.
Can we take a vote on goo-gling or goog-ling ?
Aha - that one I will take a stand on! Absolutely goo-gling. As dictated by The Maximal Onset Principle, of course...
