  • Field Theory: A Brutal Pageant Indeed,

Time is clearly ripe for a North versus South bout. Auckland's own Blackheart Bruisers, Mascara Massacre and Dead Wreckoning have had it their way for far too long...

  • Hard News: It's not OK to just make…,

    | I love PA because it welcomes and celebrates dissent.

Well, haven't seen any dissent on this thread just yet. Is it OK to disagree with Uncle Rusty? (Not that I happen to on this point – I've worked on a campaign for the same client.) Surely there must be some Ralstonites out there among the, erm, Brown-nosers?

  • Up Front: Will Work for Foo,

I presented to a conference in Chicago (an advertising thing) where people stopped breathing whenever I spoke like a plumber (to return to a theme of my own making) but were more than happy to talk openly about God.

With an NZ advertising audience, the responses would have been exactly the opposite.

And that, chickens, is the difference between us an them.

  • Up Front: Will Work for Foo,

When I was a freelance writer I would dream of the day a client would treat my work with the same respect as he or she would a plumber's.

Client: "Can you please apply a 25mm wrench to that fitting and turn it five times clockwise to remove it, then replace the washer with this black one I found in the garage, remembering to use plenty of thread tape when replacing the fitting."

    Plumber: "Cabbage cabbage."

  • Hard News: Just Friday,

Ah, mixed feelings on the OU speech being used to flog beer (disclaimer: I work for a competing ad agency). I feel that that speech is a part of my growing up in NZ and that it's been cheapened by using it in this way. OTOH, I'm sure it's now been taken to a far wider audience than it would have by any other means. Kind of like Steriogram Walkie Talkie Man being used on the iPod spot, only funnier.

  • Hard News: Some cool stuff so you won't…,

Funny, but in a year working on Canta I never knew Denis Glover once edited it. Thanks for the clip... I've always admired him and now feel a rather nice, albeit tenuous, connection. Lovely end to the week.

  • Island Life: Off the top of my head.,

Dude, I think I speak for all of us when I ask: what kind of phone do you have? Those are some pretty sweet pics.

My own cyst story (so many of us seem to have them) involves a nameless as-seen-on-TV dermatologist (hi, Liz!) who, after checking out my cheeky little friend, advised me to wear a dark shirt when I came to have it removed.

I think she was joking, but wore a red one anyway.

Some minutes into the procedure, as little red sprays of corpuscular goodness spurted from my cheek in time to my somewhat elevated pulse (Doc: "I've never had one do THAT before!") I was glad of the wardrobe choice.

Wish I'd taken a photo though.

  • Island Life: All stadium, all the time,

Re the "Volcadium" rant - nice to see someone channeling the leftover energy from a P binge to do something other than vacuum the house nine times or stick a traffic cone up a tree. Manic! Lovely! Terrifying!

  • Southerly: They don't make 'em like they…,

Hard to believe TVNZ (or was it BCNZ back then) was so hard up as to run a specialty programme for deaf kids (ups to the Vision On fan above) as mainstream programming, but then it was only months ago, it seems, when you could flick between channels of a Sunday evening and find dogs running up hills on one side (A Dog's Show) and jumping through hoops on another (Tux Wonder Dogs).

But if you're after dogs on the tele, for me you can't say fairer than the big shaggy white one that used to open and close Spot On. Was ANYONE currently famous not on that show once? Did Peter Jackson not win the film competition?

Modern tele's rubbish of course. Pokemon? Pah!

  • The NZ Web's greatest hits (and misses),

Trademe, anyone? Most of the websites mentioned so far seem to be websites of interest to people interested in websites. But how many of them have turned non-web users into not just browsers and buyers, but full-blown online retailers? Add in the sense of community it's generated along the way (that news item about the Waiheke kid being banned from school camp broke first on a Trademe forum) and Trademe has to be a clear contender for (scroll up, check the criteria... ) NZ's most important and influential website.

(Or, possibly, just eBay with brown feathers and a beak, but perhaps we won't go there.)
