  • Capture: Sunrise City,

Beautiful but sort of end of times feel to seeing so much of nature's drama.

  • Field Theory: Real Fans,

Can you be classed as a real fan if you've lived in Christchurch for many years but occasionally venture out to Super games in Wellington supporters gear? (Including attending but not seeing the infamous Gorillas in the mist final at Jade Stadium). A real fan also watches on tv which allows the continuous swearing, cheering and groaning which is the usual lot of a Hurricanes fan (except this year).

  • Hard News: The sole party of government, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

You hit the nail on the head. I've heard lots of positive things about how good a local MP Ruth Dyson has been. People vote for a good hardworking local MP, then consider which party they feel offers leadership to the country. Labour just didn't front with a team people could believe offered leadership.

  • Hard News: Poor Choices,

Based on my experience in Christchurch post quakes it is very easy to find a congregation of angry and shouty people on social media. My experience was that at first I felt validated in my anger and dstress at what was happening but then I felt unsafe as if my anger was being ramped up by others - not a good space. So I try to avoid all the comments or following Twitter & FB accounts where this can happen. Better for my mental health. And these people were not down at the full on troll level so heaven knows what that is doing to people who read and create this horrible stuff.

  • Hard News: In the red zone,

The red zone is at the end of my street. I seldom go there - it is too depressing. An film reel plays in my head - x lived here, my kids played with y there, that house had the cute dogs, that house there I coveted to live in and so on.
I do encourage the rest of Christchurch (and any visiting peeps) to go and have a look around though - you'll understand the tragic past better and may be get inspired about the possibilities for the future - parks, nature zones etc Something good has to come out of it all.

  • Hard News: Arts and letters for Christchurch,

I share Matthew's feeling of envy of some great events that are not in Christchurch but I'm sure the time will come when artists are travelling to Christchurch to stage some great events for Cantabrians. May be in the depths of winter when we'll really need a boost?

  • Hard News: Because it's about time we…, in reply to giovanni tiso,

Being a literal sort of gal I consulted the Yellow Pages as advised.13 results for expresso, 392 for espresso and 46 for guru. Gumboot guru, rug guru, parts, dogs, gardens, food, information, even a glue guru(???). But we think we'll stick with our catalogue guru - he knows his stuff and he is clear that expresso was commonly used at the time the photograph was taken - 1950s. I searched our catalogue and indeed the dreaded word expresso appears a number of times - some Portuguese items, the notes to a BBC Sounds Effects cd where we would copy their liner notes and a collection of short stories by Norman Bilbrough, one of which is titled Expresso. We really do try to be accurate but in the context of recording the details of the actual item we are listing.

  • Hard News: Because it's about time we…, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

That's the way it was so that's the way we recorded it. I consulted the guru of our catalogue who said "Expresso is an accepted alternative spelling.
The original photo has no caption and the person who added to our collection used the 'x' form.
Memory seems to tell me that in time past 'expresso' was widely used in NZ - probably still is" Our subject heading in the catalogue is spelt espresso.

Fails was an awesome place with the most amazing cast iron tables and served a mean whole flounder and chips.

  • Hard News: Where nature may win,

I've been pretty unhappy with the coverage by the media. With no instant results it sometimes seems they are scurrying around digging up anything and everything regardless of the human cost. However there was at least one compelling interview I saw on today's lunchtime TV3 news with John Sturgeon the NZRFU president on tour in England. A resident of Runanga, a miner for many years and friend and neighbour of some of those trapped he didn't pull any punches. Seeing his craggy scarred face, the tears in his eyes and the powerful realities of what he said made compelling television.TV can work by playing it straight without all the contrived drama of deliberately seeking out the most aggrieved and aggressive.
