If anyone can give advice on how to get off their list for good - it'd be much appreciated!

  • Hard News: Don't call it a consensus,

I think one of the problem with talking about concensus is that it is practically impossible to get scientists to _absolutely_ agree about anything.

A truer phrase has never been spoken - I work in an organisation full of scientists - getting them to even agree to a meeting time is like... well actually I haven't found anything which is as painful as trying to get scientists to agree so I'll leave it at that.

  • Hard News: What to make of the spray,

    Argh!!

Finally a topic which is on Public Address which I could speak about with some level of actual knowledge and expertise (I'd like to think).

I've been following this for a couple of years now, watching how it's evolved and have talked to quite a few people who were affected by the spraying (even met one or two in person).

Unfortunately because of where I work I'm constrained from really discussing the issues surrounding it or going into any detail - which is very frustrating (to understate it to the extreme).

  • Drawing on Walls,

Some great shots in there Robyn!

  • Drawing on Walls,

Thank Robyn - I've actually always loved that piece of film.

Myself and a bundle of friends always snap shots of new art that goes up round town and often trade them between each other (some sort of collectable I guess). Welly's street art does tend to be quite smart - and you're right it does seem to be less agro that other centres I've been through.

A lot of the stencil art that sprung up is brilliant, and some of the social commentary on Wellingtons walls and pavements is quite profound (if you take the time to think about them).

I'd definatly recommend checking out the trailers for the film as well - the only time you'll get to see giant flying turtles swoop over Wellington on sunny day!

  • Drawing on Walls,

Well I don't usually post videos up much but this is a very short film documenting some of Wellington's street art. A Pocket Strings Pictures Production (alliteration anyone?) featuring music from the Dukes of Leisure (that's my connection to the entire thing). Pre-bypass some there will be some areas which no longer exist.

I should also mention that Pocket String Pictures have also completed a feature length film call "The Last Great Snail Chase" - all filmed in Wellington on a shoestring budget with local music and probably one of the stranger coming of age stories I've seen.

Two trailers for the film up here as well.

Anyway thanks for indulging me and I hope people enjoy it!

  • Hard News: Ten Times Warmer,

I found out about that gig too late to get tickets (only being in Wellington for part of the summer holidays), and trooped down there in the early evening to try and beat someone up at the door to get in. No luck unfortunately.

Ahhh man that sucks - was a truley good show (sorry don't mean to rub it in). Not quite as good as Sonic Youth playing at the St James (before the renovations) on their "Dirty" tour with the Dead C opening (favorite overhead conversation from that gig was, "man these roadies are better than most bands I see!").

And while we're at it I shall make a shameless plug for a gig this Friday in Wellington I'm involved in...

    The Dukes of Leisure

    (Video's and free MP3's there)

    Spartacus R

    Cue the Sun

Bar Bodega from 10pm / $10 on the door

So if anyone in Wellington's interested in a good nights worth of instrumental meandering then feel free to pop along (I'm with the Dukes if anyones interested)...

  • Hard News: Ten Times Warmer,

-->You'll love it, she's really good live. I saw her (and interviewed her!!) at the Paramount Theatre in Wellington in '94, promoting her first solo album Hips And Makers and pretty impressed.

I saw her at that show at the paramount, and also saw Throwing Muses at orientation (just after the release of University) - both shows were brilliant and I've always been an unashamed fan of both Hersh and (too a lesser extent) Donnely... Also caught Tanya Donnely's show at the Parthenon in Wellington (which was great - a mix of TM, Belly, and her solo stuff - with David on the drums).

I think she's actually the most under rated performer of our generation - but thats just me - I grew up on The Pixies and Throwing Muses as my international inspirations.

I never made it too the 94 BDO (only actually been to one in my life, the recent one with Janes Addiction) - but I did catch The Breeders / Cinematic / Smashing Pumpkins at the town hall in Wellington, and even got a chance to hang out with Kim and Kelly before the show (press pass and I was on crutches - great combination when you throw a bottle of bourbon in to the mix). Never was big on the Pumpkins and found their live show to be like listen to Siamese Dream through a big PA, but the Breeders were fantastic that night (Cinematic were good too but I'm personally biased).

    Ah memories :-)

  • Hard News: Ten Times Warmer,

Gah - forgot to say - I am quite interested to see how scalpers try and get round the T&C on the tickets, was quite amused to see the wording (don't know if it will actually stop the scalping - or at least profiteering).

  • Hard News: Ten Times Warmer,

Well I'm pretty happy with both the Clean and Battles (and of course the Phoenix Foundation) - not too fussed about the rest at the moment. It is good to see a slightly more diverse BDO lineup - as someone said hardly an emo band in sight as such.

For me the real clinchers would be if either The Pixies or Modest Mouse were to come for the BDO. At the moment I'm just hanging out till Kristen Hersh plays down here (Wellytron).
