  • Capture: Coast to Coast, in reply to Chris Waugh,

the conversation in Chinese was of the video posted in the Smithsonian article

And over lunch I’ve been poking around Youku looking for an equivalent video to the one in the Smithsonian article, but I just can’t find anything. [...] It’s annoying, because now I’ve gone and made myself all curious about it.

Hi Chris, how are things? That's disappointing about the video being blocked, so I'll describe it to you. It was daytime footage, sufficiently wobbly to suggest that it was taken using a hand-held cellphone. The main part of the light in the sky was vivid, like part of a rainbow except not bowed, but a horizontal fairly rectangular chunk which was slightly uneven and lying on its side. The view looked as if it could have been rural, slightly hilly and with a lot of greenery. In the backgound people talking amongst themselves and rather lovely piece of music was being played, obviously just what was going on there at the time. My interest in what was being said is really to do with the historically surreal juxtaposition of the everyday with the disaster than would have descended on them so unexpectedly and so soon after. Unlike the movies, there is no warning soundtrack. The situation in Christchurch would have been exactly the same - just another day. LiIlith says that there were lots of sightings of strange lights in relation to the initial big quake there, which were discounted at the time. That was at night, whereas the one I've described here was in broad daylight.

I think that’s a glasswort . Native which grows more typically in salt meadows.

Lillith, that NatureWatch NZ website is brilliant, thank you! There is not too much to be found the web about NZ flora and fauna.

Also for rocky shore enthusiasts, the Otago University Marine Studies Aquarium Guide site is very helpful for identifying finds. I have used it a lot. Not easy to find this site on the web for some reason, so if you find it interested it's worth bookmarking.

    Hi Ian,

more stories on strange (earthquake) lights

Most interesting, I am pleased to know this!
    :-)
And gosh, I have an odd fascination to known what the conversation in Chinese was of the video posted in the Smithsonian article - Chris Waugh to the rescue? Everything so serene and so soon to be followed by such a shake-up...

Dear me, speaking for myself, I do not eat my friends or even think of it! And lest you think me hypocritical, I am a vegetarian! Adorable little people. We used to live near a community of them who loved to visit and pass the time of day. Have you ever felt their feet? They are surprisingly soft and their little claws sharp, enabling them to climb slippery banks. The sound that ducklings make always seems so like the sounds of the streams in which they live – little piping sounds – delightful.

The drama of the anti-crepuscular rays within the rainbow can be seen in this one. It hasn't reduced in size all that well, but it gives an idea of its magnificence. Click on the image to see it bigger.

So that’s where the lightening was! South of the city we certainly heard the continuous rolling thunder but didn’t see any flashes. I went out in the mizzle and sunny evening while it was still thundering and took over a hundred photos. I’ll post some of them here. A fuller selection of that dramatic hour before sunset can be found in my blog post "A solitary Christmas Eve ~ and a special one". Scroll down past all the music clips to see the pics.

    Here’s some corrosion for you…
    :- )

Hi Ian, a catchy track! I find it remininscent of Bowie. And nice to find a link on their website to Amnesty International. One doesn’t hear much of that group these days but they continue their essential Human Rights work, no doubt mostly viley unpleasant, helping protect us from each other.

We have another rainy day here in Dunedin. The sea is flatish and grey and the horizon fuzzy with rain. No walks on the beach this morning. Birds, parents and children clearly, are crowding the food I’ve put out for them on the balcony railing.
