  • Hard News: iPad Impressions,

Having owned a couple of netbooks myself, in the loosest sense they're comparable bnce you use an iPad though you realize they're very different things.
I think when you hold a website in your hand like a book you realize how if anything the iPad is probably really what a 'net book' should be.

Russel make sure you check Flipbook, I think it finally makes RSS shine define what 'Magazines'n are in the future. Basically aggregated blogs, articles and images in a print layout. Just launched and limited but showing promise.

  • Hard News: You've got to listen to the music,

That would be a real step backward then - I still think that their 15 min long intro at Splore four years ago was one of the most exciting openings to a set I've ever seen, and I wasn't the only one by the way the crowd almost literally exploded when they finally all got on stage, and that carried through the rest of the set.

Yeah that was the exact set I was thinking of - other than Shapeshifter, Kora seemed to be the next best live act to see a few years ago - maybe not so much now.

  • Hard News: You've got to listen to the music,

After seeing Kora @ R&V my thought was that their live show has gone backwards from other times I've seen them. The standout set for me was Major Lazer this year. It's a shame as I didn't see much on the main stage to get excited about. Maybe we were just a little spoilt having sourced an amazing house that seemed to be better than the drunken teen fest that was R&V.

As for BDO - Its both good and bad to see Dizzee going main stage. He certainly gets the crowds to deserve it but I do have one of my fondest BDO memories of him completely packing the Boiler Room to over capacity while I sweated over/into the trackpad of my laptop doing accompanying visuals.

    YAY Summer.

  • Hard News: Celebrity Gibberish,

The hilarious thing is the bFM pay for a park for Mikey (in the Business School park), but as he's always late he ends up parking right outside and sending his producer out to keep feeding the meter. If only he could get to work on time - he'd have a parking spot, time for a coffee and no doubt time to prepare. Alas from a 3 hour show - we get (or got if you're like me and moved on) - 45mins of his producer filling in the void, and then just over 2 hours of off the cuff ranting mixed with no doubt quickly picked in itunes music.

  • Hard News: After the Deluge,

My thoughts on the early media coverage was that all of the NZ media were slow off the mark. I understand that Samoa is small and rarely a news worthy place but it plays a large part of NZs culture and one of the more important countries in the Pacific Islands - yet neither of our major outlets seemed to have any connections in Samoa.

Also disappointing was both channels pushed heavily that they were going to be live on on their respective 7pm shows, something that never quite happened. I can understand the delays physically but from what I can tell the flight with everyone on it landed at 6pm NZ time, yet couldn't unpack their live-cross-o-matic9000's quick enough. They should have been more cautious with such a large viewer carrot. It wasn't just a - "we hope to be live" - it was - "we'll be live at 7pm - be there."
Like many others, I kept watching hoping to finally get some first hand word.

And not to be complete hater - I thought the next mornings Sunrise was really on form and at the right locations (athough Breakfast had their person live from a Carpark in Apia). Carly Flynn did a great job. Also Leilani Momoisea was stand out on RNZ.

  • Hard News: I'd just like to thank ...,

Back to the event itself - moving to Vector was mistake. Especially in a time when the music industry needs to reflect and decide what its roll is in the scheme of things. But instead of this RIANZ upsizes the whole event to an international sized spectacular - only without the budget to pull it off.

The mosh pit was half full, the stage and bands playing looked tiny and under produced and the punters on the sides didn't bother using their free tickets either as there were large sections of empty seats.

At last years inaugural Vector spectacular I was lucky enough to be seated in the furthermost row of tables and facing the back wall. I couldn't tell you what was happening in a room that size - it also doesn't help that Dai isn't the tallest man around. That night turned into a drunken talkathon with the people besides us - I couldn't recall a single winner that night.

Aotea Centre made us all 'viewers' of the event by its very seating design. And the money saved on the sheer size of Vector could be reinvested into show design. Unfortunately for us all RIANZ signed a 5 year contract to be in Vector so theres another 3 years of this sort of show to go.

  • Hard News: Siren song,

Back to Auckland Festival - Siren sounds interesting, and if I can, I will try to still catch it. I thought I might mention, as someone involved in the festival and having seen a few pack in and rehearse - the one opening tomorrow, The Anderson Project, I whole heatedly recommend it. It manages to balance the fine line of using technology to delivering a fantastic experience - while not destroying the skill of good theatre.

  • Hard News: Debating Clydesdale,

Just so you know - the majority of the Ondemands version of Media7's sound is only working on the right channel. Sometimes the intro music is in stereo.
Get your TVNZ web monkeys on to that.
While your at it get them to make the video window a bit bigger - my eyes are sore from looking at a postage stamp sized window.

All of that is out of your hands I know. Thought I should mention it though. Keep up the good work.

  • Hard News: New Dataz,

It was hacked pretty solidly and theres cash incentives to make it even easier open up too. Once its opened up, its quite easy to add the normal Quicktime codecs and have all the necessary filetype support.

I think I would by one right away if some form of XBMC is ported to self boot or run seemlessly in a linux build (something that has just started to happen). For now an XBOX1, softmodded with XBMC is by far the best Media centre experience that even you parents could use.

  • Hard News: New Dataz,

Apparently the YouTube clips will be delivered in H264 and not flash video which is fantastic news - this could explain the need to run it through Apple. Hopefully though this could be the beginning of some improvement on YouTubes videos.

As for the TV Russell - I finally upgraded 3 months ago - you'll love having movies look right and, backed up with XBMC, those TV shows we're not all downloading look amazingly better than the locally broadcast ones using modern compression.
One bad side of this widescreen revolution - watching 4:3 TV hurts.
