Re Stephen's comment on fat fees by money managers, I have often wondered if one could set up your own advisory firm and secure the discounts for yourselves and friends on perfectly straight-forward investments.

  • Hard News: Dinner in District 2,

Yi-Gods! Is Queen's Hotel STILL there? I passed through Singapore as a backpacker almost 20 years ago and well remember the threadbare sheets. I assumed it must be on the demolition list even then--it was extremely tat but the cheapest place I could find from the airport listings

The massage parlor upstairs constantly poked discreet visiting cards under the door. I spent a birthday there slurping on a very bad bottle of Australian white wine watching black and white TV where the single Government channel showed educational programmes. In despair I finally went down to the ground floor and joined in the weekly ballroom dancing session with young local Chinese. I hate ballroom dancing since I was exposed to it at an all-boys boarding school. As we had to take turns being girls I'm still totally bemused as to whether I should go forward or backwards (as a compromise I do a sort of sideways' shuffle).

  • Hard News: Arrest the bastards at the border,

Forgetting all the interesting stuff on the early political side, I'm sure Joe Kiwi at the time felt that Fay's knighthood was a just reward for vast time and expenditure he appeared to spend on the America's Cup for New Zealand. His luxury life overseas at the time and all the other "patriotic" expenditure would of course just been offset against potential F-R New Zealand tax as a marketing expense. We just got shilled a bit earlier, that's all.

  • Hard News: Itinerary packed, bags not…,

Off this thread but just a warning to all those adjacent countries like Mexico and Canada who think that George made a mistake by sending the bulk of his army and reserves overseas and that the US is ripe for the plucking........see http://www.armedamerica.org/index.html and beware!

When I used to work for the port years ago I did wonder quite how Aucklanders, or their media representatives, rationalised that the 1% or so of the Waitemata Harbour shoreline that the port occupies was specially "theirs"; must be part of some sort of public domain and thus able to be taken away from any port use or control. However, I guess that's all a bit passe now.

Off topic, I was saddened to hear last night Te Radar inform a group of writers and screenwriters at a Queen Street function that he had been "sacked" that morning by the NZ Herald so presumably we won't be seeing his column which I certainly enjoyed
