  • Speaker: Vote Grey Warbler,

Sometimes things just are what they are, and nothing more.

The leaning tower of Pisa is not necessarily symbolic of a middle-aged architects battle with impotence.

    It's a tower leaning over a bit.

The Homer tunnell is not necessarily Otago making an arsehole of itself.

    It's a tunnell.

    Elect Grey Warbler campaign?

It was, an "Elect The Grey Warbler campaign".

Don't sully this lovely bird with political chicanery. ;-)

And thanks everybody for such a great effort. I was truly elated at the result.

    Kindest regards, Graeme.

  • Speaker: Vote Grey Warbler,

Announced at 1:57 today on Radio Live. Forest & Bird 2007 Bird Of The Year.

Grey Warbler/Riroriro (Gerygone igata) wins at last!

Same jersey as the All Blacks, but a different result.

However, Greme Hill, Secretary of the Committe to Elect the Grey Warbler 2007, would like to unreservedly apologise for some of the unkind things he said about some of the other Native Bird contestants during the camnpaign this week. He understands that they may have indeed been hurtful and sincerely regrets any aspersions cast in any of their directions.

"I'm deeply sorry about the level I found myself descending to, making personal ad birdinem attacks. I would like to specially apologise to the Woodpigeon and Blackfronted Tern communities. It was coming to the end of a tough campaign and I admit that I was rather tired and emotional when those remarks were made.

Nonetheless, this is a tremendous result, one that all the Grey Warbler committee members, supporters and voters who put in so much effort are ecstatic about and can be rightfully proud of. This is a great day for the Grey Warbler community, our hardest working native."

  • Speaker: Vote Grey Warbler,

    NEWSFLASH.

The Forest and Bird "Bird Of The Year 2007" will be announced first on Radio Live at approximately 1:50pm this Saturday. I think voting must close around mid-day Saturday.

The on air host at that time will be a very nervous Graeme Hill along with, by sheer fluke, your Public Address host, Russell Brown!

The announcement will come live from Forest & Bird Communications & Media person, Helen Bain after crunching the numbers on her laptop.

  • Speaker: Vote Grey Warbler,

Has anybody else noticed what bird is coming in dead last in the Forest & Bird form guide illustration? I think that bird might just be the GW. Take a look.

    http://www.forestandbird.org.nz/poll.asp

If it isn't the GW then it has to be the North Island Robin, meaning that the GW isn't even illustrated!

That's just the sort of prejudice that we at the CTETGWBOTY2007 have to put up with.

Sigh... it's just another form of racism!

  • Speaker: Vote Grey Warbler,

Yes, the Bar-Tailed Godwit is an impressive athlete. World record holder for non-stop flying distance. Alaska to NZ non-stop. Makes Steve Gurney seem downright lazy. It is encouraging that a festival of the Godwit (their return) in Christchurch is developing into quite an event. At least that's what I'm told. Ted Hughes' phrase is most applicable.

I am stunned that the BTG hasn't summoned more support this year as so many have been tagged with radio thingummys and their return came with some fanfare this year. E7 (female) was the first to land in NZ and she took of from the TOP of Alaska. Didn't even bother to fuel up in the south of the state. Incredible.

Yet still... the GW is ours, and all ours. We don't have to share them with the Eskimos. Ha!

  • Speaker: Vote Grey Warbler,

Great news for the GW campaign, but no complacency please. This result as of lunchtime today may just fire the blackfronted Brethren back into action again, along with others. Not many votes all in all though is it. Disappointing. Oh well. I'm never happy am I.. ho ho ho.

  • Speaker: Vote Grey Warbler,

Photographing GWs is unsurprisingly a very hard thing to do well. This is an outstanding effort from Dave Curtis showing the rudimentary fantail.
Geoff Moon is of course the Hall Of Famer with a box brownie. He's still active at 96!

  • Speaker: Vote Grey Warbler,

    By the way...

Perhaps one of Jesus Christ's biographer's bigger marnuses?

    Matthew 6:26
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

Actually, JC, or Matthew, if you watched them for more than five minutes you'd find they work fucking hard!

Gratitude goes to CK Stead for pointing this out.

    Go the Warbler!
